It sounds rather good! Even if that doesn't turn out to be the final destination, it would make a good meeting place as the only Edinburgh pub with directions posted in the Guide...
(Plus, I feel it's my duty to expand on the "some sort of cider" section in the entry )

As far as I remember, in Scotland anyone over the age of 14 can have wine with a meal... How about a burger and a bottle of house red?

I'll work on some directions, but I think meeting at the base of the Scott Monument would be easiest. Esp. for those coming from Waverly Train Station or St Andrews Bus station, also it is within easy walking distance from a couple of carparks. (and plenty of pubs on George Street/Frederick Street/Hanover St.)
This link will take you to one of many webcams in Edinburgh, but it does show the Scott Monument, so you know what it looks like
http://www.camvista.com/scotland/edinburgh/capcity.php3
If you guys email me (address on home page) and tell me where you think you will arrive in Edin, then i will email directions, If we are all in agreement to location. As for time, say 2pm onwards?
Give it a week, say, to think it over, discuss, etc. And then we shall make a decision. Any other suggestions gratefully recieved
We can always move on to the Gardens proper, once a few people have arrived, decide on something to do, so that latecomers can look out for us.

oh... a pub crawl along Rose street (runs parallel to Princes St. )would be great! apparently no one has made it all the way both sides drinking a pint in each pub!
2 at Scott Monument.... see you there!

Actually my dad did, when there were about 20 odd bars. This was about 30 years ago, mind. In actual fact he was barred from more pubs along Rose St., than he was still allowed in, ie more than half!

The Scott Monument is just up the stairs from Waverly, isn't it? I'lll be there.. 2 pm on the 5th.
Oh, and the sports bar thing wasn't a suggestionn, it was just the only bar or the like that I knew the name of in Edinburgh. It's mentioned pretty frequently at the Claymores games as the place to go after the game, to meet the players and to watch the game one more time. Don't ask me why anyone would want to watch a game on tv, that they have just seen live, though.

The Last Drop on the Grassmarket, used to be a good pub - at least it was the last time I was there, which was about two years ago. Admittedly it is VERY ickle. I like cozy 'though. I'm sure there is at least one person in our midst who can suggest a good place to start out from, even if we decide to move on somewhere else. I would also like to register my distaste with anywhere that calls itself 'sports bar'. I have an irrational fear of the kind of place where the bart staff wear running shorts - I'm not joking, the last 'sports bar' I visited tortured its staff in this way.

Ok. Sorry to split hairs, but which side of the Scot Monument - the side on the road, or the side in the gardens? It's just that we're talking Fringe Festival time here - impossible to find a square foot of ground to stand on unless you mug the nearest tourist. The place will be chock a block with people milling around and looking lost, which may be a little confusing.

If the place will be as packed as you say, Miss Underground, with people looking helplessly lost, I think your idea of deciding the side of the monument where we'll meet might be a good one. But the question might still arise on how we will recognise each other. If we start asking a whole heap of innocent bystanders if they are Guide researchers, those friendly men in white coats might relocate us to one of those nice rooms with cushions all over that are so comfy to sleep in.

I could buy one of those souvenir bagpipes in the store across the street and try to play them..
On the other handd, that'll probably just bring those men in white coats even faster.

A piper in Edinburgh during the festival? It would be easier to identify the one person standing around who *isn't* playing the bagpipes.
