*Thinking about markets and fun-fairs, big parks and fat squirrels, pubs.*

How late is it appropriate to let children stay in the pubs?
These "rules" differ from place to place, country to country.

Some pointers to the archaic (WW1) licencing laws of the UK.
Pubs open between 11am and 11pm. Some may have a late licence alowing them to stay open later. You have to be 18 or over to purchase alcohol of any kind. The laws allowing children into pubs are quite funny. There has to be a family room where the people under age are kept (you're supposed to be about 16 before being allowed into pubs). The family room is supposed not to have a bar in it.
The best thing to do would be to see what else is going on. In some places you wouldn't want to keep your children in there. Some pubs which are nice sit down in the afternoon and have something to eat transform into very busy pubs quite quickly when the office empty and people go for a drink after work, others will be fine.

***** We interrupt this program to bring this important message *****

Lil's ISP is not working at the moment due to some cable being cut somewhere. They haven't given a time for the fix, so she doesn't know when she will be back. She can't access her email or get to h2g2. She sends her regrets.

Here (in Bergen) it's depending how the child behaves, it's a unwritten rule that after eight, half past, children should be home. As long as it's not to croudy, an hour more in the summertime. Children should not be exposed to intoxicated people anyway.

Shame about Lil's connection. I was kind of wondering where she had got to.

If the manager of the pub feels there is a problem with the children being there then they'll probably say. There is no unwritten rule about children and pubs, well there are but there are probably as many as there are pubs which let them in.

Some people shouldn't be allowed near bulldozers. Or any sharp tool.

I'm afraid I'll have to pass on the refreshments, Lil, but thanks anyway. Very nice gallery, BTW. I'm a dabbler in the digital arts myself. Take a look at my page for a rather curious invention of mine. Hopefully, I'll soon be adding a mini casino to the wallet - any other suggestions from anyone out there would be gratefully received.

So far, people have suggested:
Suicide Pez dispenser,
Camera,
Pong game,
Kipper launcher,
Chainsaw, and
an old sock.

Actually, Bald Bloke, I did do it myself. I'm amazed that someone finally visited my page - thank you. Can I have your autograph?

If you're interested, I used Macromedia Flash 4 to make it - I'm sure you could download a demo at their website (www.macromedia.com).

Any suggestions for other gizmos to include?

Look at you. Suspended animation. Haven't you been eating enough?

If my ISP doesn't get it together before I run through my free minutes on my backup account with CompuServe, I'm going to abandon the other. What I can't get over is how much faster this is than Mindspring. Why is that? Is it the ISP? The browser? (I'm in the CIS window, rather than IE just now)

Oh well, I'll be here tomorrow one way or another. See you all later -- got to watch these minutes. As soon as I use them up I go over to 2.95 per hour. Argh!

That's alright Lil, up until I swapped to Unlimited for a fixed fee, I only got 3 hours a month for my fee and then 2.75 british pounds an hour after that! Plus cost of phonecall! probably the other reason I never really got involved here the first time round!

Oh, don't mind me.

Colonel Sellers, who has the same ISP as Lil, and spent 20 minutes trying to connect to his local server earlier today with no success, getting only busy signals.

Hi CS, I won't mind, however I might suggest a bottle of Laphroaig 10 year old might be better than glenlivet. I presume you are stocking up for Thu/Fri?
