As I've said elsewhere, I'll help out as I can in between moving and soon not having internet at home...

I'd hope so! I've been here longer than anywhere IRL (consecutively, anyway) and I've been in contact with some folks on here for longer than anyone not related to me!

Just a note, there is a typo in the first post.
It's me, Witty Moniker that will be working with your all. Not Witty Ditty.
Carry on!

And please disregard the typo in ~my~ post.

I'm signing up. I don't know what I'll be any good at to be honest.
But I'm registering an interest if you know what I mean?

I bet Effers would make a great WTF person. (Er, that would be a person to make sure that those that have been stuck being confidential for so long didn't get stuck in their navels)

I'm useful for something I'm sure.
What's happening with the transition, and what's involved in the training?

Haragai Posted Jun 21, 2011
I heard the Transistion Team will be sending E-mails to all Researchers to inform them about the move.
I can see a problem with that and because it is a Community-related issue more than a Technical one I thought to drop it here, as well as volunteer for anything you think I am useful for.
To take myself as an example: I know I signed up pre-rupert in 1999 but was surprised by the Rupert as I was not that much involved back then and had completely missed out on the move to the BBC. I also had never heard of the n2g2 alternative etc.
The E-mail address I had in 1999 was one with the internetprovider i.e. it ended with the domain of the provider. I have since moved several times to other providers and when it was possible I started using my Gmail account as the universal account for everything.
When the mass mailing goes out I know one will arrive at the Email address I now use and have used to register my current ID.
If by any strange twist of fate my old registration is preserved somehow than the Email sent to the old Email address will fail to arrive and will be answered by the mailserver as a "user or address unknown" error if at all.
I guesstimate there will be around 30% of the Emails returned with an error or there will be no response at all.
I think it a nice idea to post all the Researchers names on an A-page so the active/returning Researchers can check if they know a Researcher and can contact them saying "Did you know h2g2 is moving ?". Kind of fits nicely in the "No Researcher left behind" theme.

Errr, we'll get back to you when we actually know the answers.
There'll probably be a few different groups; the existing ACEs, obviously, people who deal with making sure everyone gets through the transition period, people who help out making sure that everyone can participate in the site as much as they want to. Oh, and moderators, although their job will be a work-in-progress for a while until we truly find our feet.
We'll keep you posted when details start to emerge.
Thanks to everyone who has posted so far!

Haragai, thank you for your thoughtful post.
The exact details of how we manage the transition from the BBC are being discussed with the BBC technical teams.
One thing I do want to reiterate on the subject of mass-emailings: nothing will be done that contravenes the Data Protection Act. This is an act which ensures that personal data is not mis-used. It applies in Europe in particular, but it is the gold standard for good practice throughout the world.

I would like to be a part of this team, if I may. Even if only unofficially. Longevity and loads of browsings, ... I know of a fair number of folks and common concerns

I'd like to carry on being an ACE... by which I mean start being an ACE (stupid real life keeps doing things whenever I sit down to work on my greeting, then I'm all distracted and forget to do it!).
Key: Complain about this post
