smiley - ok Okay, then! We don't call them that. They are sometimes called 'goobers', though. (Have been since the 1850s or so.)

Oh! smiley - doh I just looked it up and 'goober' is from a word in the Kikongo language. (We sometimes get our Southern food words from African languages.)

That was Noah Webster. Dictionaries were a new idea then - he made the first American one.

And he didn't like silent letters. smiley - rofl

Of course, what with the Civil War coming after that, when I was a kid, the teacher said we could spell any way we liked, so I mostly used English spelling...UNTIL we moved to Pittsburgh - and I had to use American spelling. smiley - rofl

At least I know both - which is good for the smiley - thepost. smiley - rofl

Caiman raptor elk - Inside big box, thinking.

Teachers claiming: 'Spell any way you like.' can expect to be challenged. My brother had one like that for Religion. His class really tried to write any word other than normal.

My Religion teacher on the other hand, was really picky. She got pretty angry at me when I came to ask her what she wrote in my notebook. Apparently she tried to convey that she couldn't read my handwriting. The feeling was mutual.

My Dad had to write her a letter to defuse the situation and argue that I should be graded on what I wrote, not how.

smiley - laugh People have complained about my handwriting in a number of languages. My Yiddish teacher told me I really needed to work on it. Yiddish uses the Hebrew alphabet.

To my astonishment, there was one language where my handwriting got compliments - GREEK.

I love keyboards.
