Why have I become addicted to European crime dramas

It started with jordskott, then HWMBO started taping (can I still call it that?) Any foreign programme he could find. Some are dire, occupied but I can't stop watching. Others are brill,
I know who you are, the story line to this was fantastic. Now as you can imagine all these are subtitled. The Spanish one is OK because I still remember some from school but the others, I'm not the fasted reader so even I don't understand the attraction.

I found myself watching Spiral(?). I'm not sure why - I guess it was the novelty. I also like to watch foreign TV when I'm abroad even though I don't understand much of it (I think the highlight was watching Midsummer Murders in Lithuania overdubbed by one male actor who did all the parts in the same voice - male AND female) just to see what it's like.
I was looking forward to the 2nd series of Spiral(?), but when it came to it I couldn't be bothered. I'm not a fan of crime dramas particularly but tried Hot Sun - too violent. There was another recently about 2 cities - The City and The City. I( struggled through 3 or so and then jumped ship.
Happy Valley though. Loved it. But that's probably as much to do with Sarah Lancashire as anything.
PP.

I like crime drama shows, but only those that are relatively local... ie: Canadian or US. I've seen very few UK products that 'grabbed' me

I'm from the UK so The city and the city, happy valley and hot sun are all home grown for me. Not sure what I really thought of the first two TBH but happy valley I liked

At the risk of being one of those bores who insist that the book is much better... when it comes to City and the City, the book *is* so much better.

Otto, I shall read the book, as I too always think the book is always better.

Except for "Inherent vice," which is incomprehensible as a book and as a movie.

Are there any European crime dramas that are available as movies in the U.S. theaters?

"Overboard," on the other hand, was playing last night when I went to the movie theater. What's not to like about living on a sixty million dollar yacht? ?.

When have they not done a remake? Seems to be the only way the film industry operates these days.

Sadly, you are right. Worse, the sequels are often reboots or reruns of comic book superhero movies.
