I believe the round ball-shaped door knob was designed to allow
the maximum application of torque over a broader surface than a
single lever handle was able to apply.

One of the doors at my local supermarket is supposed to open automatically when it senses a shopper, but it no longer does that. There's a sign on it that says "Push." I grudingly push, and find that the *next* door has no such sign, but also needs pushing smiley - grr.
