How do you find a good hairdresser?

Post 1

My wife is very sensitive about her hair. Having it cut properly in very important to her. Her old hairdresser has left to bring up her baby and nobody else seems to be up to scratch- the failures cause deep distress. How can you get a least a reasonable guarantee of a decent haircut?

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

You can't. Probably better to work on not having to have perfect hair.

Find someone whose hair is always perfect and ask them where they get their hair done?

I'd second that. Personal recommendation is generally more reliable. Does she have any friends/colleagues whose hair she admires? If so she should ask who cuts it.

Oooh, it's a tricky one, and as you say, very important!

Personal recommendation is good. One step on from that are things like "rate my salon" - I know I'm asked to give feedback on my hairdresser on that.

The best hair-dressers I have found always been through personal recommendation. The tricky thing is choosing the person to make the recommendation! There's no point in asking someone whose hair is completely unlike your wife's or unlike what your wife would like.

Good luck. It does matter.

Were you thinking of getting a mobile hairdresser to call, or to visit a salon?

It's well nigh impossible with a salon to find a reliable hairdresser, unless you expect to pay a premium price. If so, I'd suggest going to a reputable chain, and ask for their top stylist. These will charge more than the other stylists in the same salon, but you should find it is worth it. They have the experience. Often they are the salon managers.

My sister has a good stylist, but he just takes private clients, and was found through word of mouth.

Don't look at my hair, its a permanent bad hair day.

>>It does matter.

That depends on the individual. For example, it doesn't matter to me.

To me a good hairdresser is one that keeps their mouth shut while cutting my hair. I don't want to be subjected to inane gossip.

Sho - employed again!

what's important to me when I go to the hairdresser is that they do what I tell them, and I trust them to do it.

Just recently I've been complaining to my hairdressers (I have several diffrent ladies who cut my hair at the salon I use) that they aren't cutting it short enough. I have curly, and I hate it when it's long enough to get curly, and (I think) my hair suits me better short. Shorter. Shorter than that.

If I can't trust them to do what I ask, then they aren't the one for me.

is it like that with your wife, Benjamin? if so, it's going to be trial and error.

Oh and have her dig out a few photos of herself where she has a hairstyle that she really likes.

Good luck. I'd generally rather go to the dentist than the hairdresser

Ain't it the old question

Two hairdressers opposite each other on the street.
Which one do you got to -
The one with the nice hair-do
or
the scruffy one

?

Well, nowadays you couldn't be sure that the scruffy hairdo isn't something elaborately crafted.

Nothing new to add from me - I got lucky on my first attempt, strayed a couple of times to cheaper ones but it wasn't worth it. Costs me quite a bit though, it's the one thing that really makes me wince when it comes to spending money.
