I've been giving this some thought and I've come to a conclusion.
I hope nobody did tell Laura. I mean, what good could it do? Could anything positive come out of her knowing he loved her? Much better to let her know he was the kind of selfish, materialistic guy that sees a thousand dollar prize for a race in a sport in which there is no indication he has any prior experience and, self-evidently, no particular aptitude as it transpires.
No doubt Laura's mum knew this though and kept schtum.
