h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I work in a health food shop, and a customer called me 'health ' yesterday. I thought that was very nice, as it shows that my work is appreciated. Not that it matters much, mind, seeing as the shop will be closed in three months and I'll lose my job. But it is still nice to know that the work I've put in over the last 15 years hasn't gone unnoticed by all.

So, what's your most recent boost?

I'm 'an acquired taste.'

I got something similar: "You're not like other people, are you?"

*Oh yeah, yeah..unh! That's what I'm talking about, yeah! Oh, oh, yeah!*

Then there was a leaving speech (for someone else - not me.):

'Some people you work with you think 'Well- at least I don't have to socialise with them.' Bill is such a nice guy and great to socialise with. It's a pity I have to work with him.'

I'm not sure that was quite what he meant.

Must have been compliments day yesterday!

I got aked how much weight I'd lost, and admired in my tight black trousers.

And following on a quick leaflet/survey I'd done around our neighbours (I'm on the management committee) I got a written thank you for all my work .

I always make a point of dishing out "thank-you"s too: last week I gave some cupcakes to the clothing repair shop girls for doing such a great job on some items I'd left with them. Yes I know they're just doing their job, but as you say, being acknowledged has a powerful effect.

I said >>Get the 'f' off my chair.<< the other day.

And was pleased get messages from a half dozen random North American females on how much I'd made them laugh and brightened their day with my funny and clever remark.

It's nice to know that one's smartarse comments are appreciated.

peopole at work were calling me 'the hero' this morning

Customer: 'Ooh, I'm glad you're in tonight, I always like to laugh at you'

Me: '*at* me?

Customer: 'Well, erm, you know what I mean, buggar'

Regulars are ace, you can take the michael out of them...

big issue seller lady outside uni train station said 'I like your smile' when I smiled and declined to buy a copy.

And a non-compliment but a nice moment, I thought, when I went to pick up the free paper from the train station and some bloke just beat me to it, so he picked up two, smiled, and gave one to me.

Yay for random acts of kindness, no matter how small.

Most recent would be my head of sixth form who said my presentation went well.*

Second would be the people who said thanks to me when I'd talked to them about sixth form.

Third most recent would be HonestIago on the John Venables thread.

*I'm still not sure about how well it actually went though.


Someone from the year below me at my old school came to the open day for sixth form today. I've spoken to him about twice at my old school and he still recognises me. He doesn't know my name though, which just makes it all the more impressive that he actually remembers me.

The context is difficult to explain so I won't, but my colleagues basically said I was always cheerful and happy, and would need a squeaky red nose, baggy trousers and large floppy shoes to be any more cheerful.

Which was nice to know.

Dammit - I've already got those

I got told by my (very savvy) 81 year old employer who i admire and have a lot of respect for that i always looked 'elegant'.
I have to say whenever i think about it it always cheers me up. I dont know many other 26 year olds who are called elegant, but atleast even if many things arent my strongest point i know i can atleast dress myself in the morning- and apparently do it very well!!

Due to the nature of my job I get a lot of appreciation (people just their pets), but the most recent was 'you have been an angel'. I took a puppy home overnight to allow the owner (in her 60s) get a much needed good night's sleep. Funny thing is, he slept right through for me (admittedly I have been getting up at 5.30am).

Got told by someone else today that feedback about open evening was good, so that made me happy.

Last week a very pretty shopgirl told me I smelled like candy

I of course replied, 'that's because I'm just so darn sweet'

..and gave her one of the strawberry candies I had in my pocket

Two evening ago, and it was somethign like
'God that feels good'
To which I think I replied somethign along the lines of 'you didn't strike me as the religious kind',
Which got a nice laugh and set of giggles, which kinda ruined the moment really
