h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I had my Researcher/Username/Nickname modded - changed back to my U-number due to the use of the word 'tits' - someone needs to get a life, and a sense of humour...

It all started a few days ago. I went into work (charity shop), and there on the book shelf (I sort the books) someone had left me a bright orange badge with the words 'I haven't got big tits I've just got a small body'.

Now, I thought that would make a great tag line for my hootoo name, so a couple of days ago I added it, and tonight I found an email from the Mods.


Nicknames will be failed if they:

Contain website or email addresses
Appear to impersonate someone else
Contain swearwords or other words which may cause offence
Contain no character breaks, so stretch the boards
Break the general messageboard House Rules


The only one it could be is

But 'tits' is not a banned word...

My tits are the butt of many jokes, not only from men. I go to a club, all women, mostly over 60 yrs old, even they take the mickey out of my tits, I take it all in good humour...would've been nice to have that humour here too...

Not me, but I do get a little upset when some researchers start thinking that big is best and get themselves over excited by what they got, that badge sounds to me

I'm not offended in the slightest. Tits is not a swearword *or* offensive. Are there any swearwords that mean tits? Breasts, boobs, paps, baps, bazookas, bosom, rack, stack... Any more and any that are rude?

I would guess it was removed because of the general house rules rather than for being a swear word. And that it's because of the bbc message board standards rather than h2g2's. I think sometimes thinks get pulled by non-h2g2 staff.

If it were me I'd be asking the Eds for a detailed explanation and reinstatement. Email them directly. Tits are part of the female body, and while I can see some use of the word 'tit' might break the house rules (context is everything) I can't see how what you had in your tagline did. I mean if we can have a very long thread about the word knob...

The Eds are always more sensitive to names than to what's in postings because it is everywhere on the site, and can be viewed in Who's Online and doesn't advertise h2g2 to its best. People can ignore one post with something in it that they don't like, but a name is much more difficult.

I don't find it offensive, but then I've had my name failed for calling myself 'Nighthoover' along with about ten other Researchers, also for 'Mina - happy as a pig in shhhh.... mud'.

Ho hum.

Just live with it I'm afraid.

Offended is sort of half turning away, defensive.

Affronted is shoulders back, chest out, glare.

Interesting. Probably why I don't think of myself as offended very much.

If Traveller in Time can get away with signing his post TiT, you should be allowed tit in your name, let folks it if they feel the need.

I just had my Entry on 'categorised Mnemonics' removed due to 'obscene content' The whole point of mnemonics is that often it's their obscenity that makes them memorable .

Except of course that you can have effective mnemonics without being obscene or offensive. And the point of yikesing your page was because it broke the House Rules (or do you think you should be able to post something that is obscene and offensive but no-one else should? Or that the site should be open slather?).

The other point of yikesing it was to point out the ramifications for people of colour and women of such racist and misogynist tools.

And there is a world of difference between

'I haven't got big tits I've just got a small body' in an h2g2 tagline

and

a mnemonic about black men raping young girls being used as a learning tool by an industry dominated by white men.

It's a concern that you can't see the difference but you're probably not completely alone in that.
