"Your average joe who wanders in and asks for a huge piece of flash..."

My average Joe got his own name tattooed on himself.

mmhm... And did I say I thought it was a good idea?

On the other hand, a friend of mine has a half-finished (money problems, nothing else, it's a huge piece) tribal pattern on his arms, the one on his right forearm has his name in it. It was freehanded by the artist and it's subtle, but I like it, and so does the chap who has it.

On the other hand, I've no idea why people INTENTIONALLY tattoo names on theirselves. Especially their own or a partners... Smacks of short-sightedness or a likelyhood to forget one's own name, neither of which are good places to get a tattoo from!

Never said you did. Twas a snappy one liner.

You don't have to decode your haiku to figure out who you are Robyn!

I saw a news article the other day about a guy who to celebrate fifteen years of marriage, had three portraits done on his back of his wife and two daughters. The wife left him for another man not too long after. At least a name can be covered up.

Ah yes, one of the golden rules of getting a tattoo is never, ever get the name or likeness of someone you are having a relationship with. It's just asking for trouble.

yeah... I saw a chap with his three children's faces down his arm. Personally, not my idea of an attractive tattoo. Photos, mate, P-H-O-T-O-S! It smacked, to my evil judgemental mind, of that weird desperate LOOK! I LOVE MY CHILDREN thing that some people seem to think is what will do instead of actually doing things for them and bringing them up properly...

Also, how many families fall out? Even children can fall out with their parents, sometimes irrepairably... I hate to be a total cynic (realist) but sometimes a little awareness would be better than a lot of ink.

Feisor - -0- Generix I made it back - sortof ...

Best solution for those "girl/boyfriends' names" ones was suggested recently - just get the heart outline done with the ribbon thing across it - but no name. The name can be added in henna and changed at will. Love it smiley - laugh

Wow, I've learnt from this thread! ("tramp stamps"....)

"the flaming shin sounds rather sexy if done right."

Maybe it's just the weird way my mind works, but my first association of "shin" wasn't the lower leg!

It was the "shin" which is a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which denotes "fire", "flame", "spirit": I had a mental image of this letter emerging from a fire, glowing red and orange, and thinking "that would work" . I'll try and sketch this out, see if the idea looks good on paper!

Just not into them at all.
If I want to mark up the landscape, I have scars, and each of them has a story.
I used to work with a bunch of younger people and at some point, some asked me if I had a "Tat". "No," I replied, "I have scars. Tattoos are ritual scars, and I refuse to pay good money for them. See this? (I pointed to my right forearm) This is a SCAR. Y'know how I got it?"
Negative nods from the alledged youths.
"Sword fighting! Any other questions?"

Steve-O from Jackass has a life-size tattoo of his own face, apparently as a dare of some kind.

At least if one of his "hilarious" stunts goes wrong he'll have a spare face to graft in place of the original...

he's almost as amusing as ebola. I wouldnt take him as a role model for anything, much less tattoos... Or piercings...

He's a bleeding wazzock, that lad.

No, I do SCA combat. In this case, the rattan sword struck my armor and drove it (the armor) into my arm.
Cut me a good un.
