It is a leap year - how is a girl supposed to propose?

I have come to the conclusion that my other half is never going to pull his finger out and ask me so I am thinking about proposing to him . As this year is a leap year, it would seem to be ok for me to do this on the 29th, but while the form is pretty well established for chaps to propose (on one knee, proffering a ring) I have no idea how girls should do it!
What should I proffer? I am not giving him a diamond ring Apart from anything else he can't wear rings because of his eczema and he'd just lose it. I can only think of a couple of acceptable jewelery presents for blokes and none of them feel right (will you marry me, here are some cufflinks).
What is a girl to do?

An ex-colleague of mine proposed to her boyfriend in a favourite park of theirs on the 29th. I don't believe she gave him anything. He accepted by the way.
When I proposed to my better half earlier on this year I just had a mini bottle of champagne with me. I'd carried it all the way up Table Mountain though, so it probably had more surprise value.
You might want to drop the odd hint that you're planning something. A little surprise is nice, a complete shock is a bit much before such an important decision! (Does he know that women can ask on the 29th, for one?)

Girls may propose on the 29th? Did not know that. Hootoo keeps you smart, see...
Wouldn't it be better, though, to get married on Feb29? I mean, that way it will not happen all that often that the husband forgets to bring flowers on the wedding day
But as to proposing... no idea. Don't even know how I (as a guy) am supposed to do that sort of thing.

I haven't definitey decided to do it yet, I am basically old fashioned at heart (so is he) so I don't know if I really want to do it this. Got two weeks to think about it...

Kelli- how good is he at knowing traditions and established form? Does he know he's obliged to give you a silk gown or silk gloves if he refuses? If he does, you could try starting by asking him if he has any plans to buy you silk in the near future...
Don't forget to thank Saint Valentine- he gave you the right in the first place, after all, that's how he ended up patron saint of lovers.

re, jewelry. the ring is symbolic - he may not be able to wear on his finger, so get a chain so that he can wear it 'round is neck. i don't think cufflinks would do, no matter how nice they are.

Mycelium, that is a good idea. Will have to do some shopping.
Kerr, don't know if he knows about the silk, I'll try dropping some hints.
As for St Valentine, it seems like I will be spending his saint's day apart from my fella - I am snowed in at Athens (yes, the one in Greece, the hot one). Am really upset about it when I told him all the flights have been cancelled my boyfriend went all shifty and said that might upset his plans, he wouldn't tell me what those plans were though. So having spoiled his day, I had better plan something nice for the 29th. Don't think I can manage table mountain though

Never knew any of that about the 29th. What actually is the significance? Apart from the fact that 29th of Feb is rare.
Oh, and WIRO, that tangent was just crying out for someone to ask you to elaborate. So.................elaborate!

I proposed to my bloke, it wasn't a leap year, I couldn't be bothered to wait that long. I just said 'will you marry me'In a quiet moment of course with no-one else around. He asked me three times after that if I remembered saying it, or checking that I hadn't been drinking etc.

So do it on the 28th and claim you're actually making the proposal in a different time zone.
Or tomorrow. Propose on the 14th.
And good luck!
