Chistmas decorations - when to take down?
Beatrice Started conversation Jan 3, 2007
I can never remember - is it bad luck to take them down BEFORE 6th January, or bad luck to have them up AFTER 6th January? What happens if I take them down ON 6th January itself, (which, being a Saturday, is the most likely date I'll do it this year)?

Take them down 'afore Twelfth Night
And ye'll nae suffer any plight
Take them down after though
And ye'd best mind how ye go!
That's an ancient Scottish folk rhyme what I just made up.

I thought they had to come down on the 5th January (otherwise known as the Twelfth Night), which is indeed Friday.
But I've already taken down what bits of Christmas decorations we had as I frankly got fed up with them.

Well mine are coming down on the 6th as they always do because that IS 12th night. We have a feast of all the Crimbo goodies that are still left in the house and then the New Years diet starts.

I left them up a few days after twelth night and lived to tell the tale, obviously.
Also some of what I call Christmas decorations are in fact lights that I use at other times of year, not just the rope lights but something that looks like an oil lantern but uses ordinary bulbs, well LCD ones anyway. My Lava lamp is used at Christmas to give a bit of colour, which is why I carry one using it after decorations come down as room looks so dull after.

Lava lamps what a good idea! The house is looking a bit sad without any decs and I have 2 lamps sitting in boxes from when we moved ages ago.
Thanks for the tip!

i used to take mine down on new years eve.
well i hadnt got any parties to go to, in those days and i used to think that with all the christmas stuff put away, it was a clean house for fresh new year.
now my current partner insists on twelth night.
as i have 3 trees and many many santas(40ish) to put away as well as the other usual trappings, of christmas,. i made a start today...
boy did he go mad
it takes me about 4 days to put it all up on display and just as long to get rid of it.

Mine came down on new years day, then I gave the living room a good clean.
I've left some orange fairy lights in the fireplace - this is the first Christmas I've put them there and I realised it makes it look like there's a fire in the grate. It's so cosy I don't want to get rid of them. They actually make the room feel warmer.

My husband has agreed to take them down before Valentine's day. Can you tell he loves the decorations?

we usually take ours down on the saturday nearest the 6th (often after the 6th) but this year and the Gruesome Twosome took them down yesterday
but it doesn't look so bad because I took down a lot of our usual decorations/ornaments to put back afterwards (because I hate the bare post-Christmas look) and we have lots of paper streamers up for Gruesome #1's birthday on New Year's Eve which will stay there until we get round to having a party for her - which might be in February

the decorations are down
i now have to get the storage boxes from the attic. sort out the decorations accordingly (i am methodical and meticulous with my precious decs) and then put them all back
the hall, living room and dining room look decidely bare, except for the odd few boxes of left over chocolates and mince pies, no one would know that christmas has been and gone

Our Christmas decorations let us know they wanted to come down. The tree fell to the floor last night! <--- just like that!

Well they should all be down now..apparently, although some have still got their lights on around here.
A guy I saw on TV a while ago said he keeps his Christmas decoration's up all year, every year and treats every day like it is Christmas, he seemed very happy, did'nt do him any harm.

Oh, they're all down.
Of course, I'll be vacuuming needles and broken glass from under the TV stand for a while ...

we have had all the decorations down from inside for a while. The outside ones (a wooden tree, snowman and reindeer - I make a new one every year) went in on Saturday.
but the string of fairy lights are still on the balcony. Here it seems to be traditional that outside lights stay up until Karneva and then come down right after Rosenmontag (the day before shrove Tuesday)
