I sort of see where you're coming from. So far we've given instances that show there are many reasons we end up with single-parent families. By no means all include affixing blame to one partner or the other, but in most cases the family unit at least starts out with two parents. This move by the government allows an easier "default" position of single parenthood.

In an ideal world, how many single parents would admit that they would "rather" have a willing partner around to help? In which case, is it advisable to be encouraging people to start a family from a disadvantaged position?

I don't see any evidence that single parenting causes society's ills or makes kids go bad. I see plenty of evidence that poverty causes both of those things. Most single parents live on an inadequate income. The sick irony is that those people who condemn single parents are often those who think they shouldn't have benefit entitlements but it is exactly that lack of financial security that places children at risk.

Someone said earlier that it takes two people to raise a child. It doesn't. It takes a community. A solo mum with adequate income living, well supported in a caring community is just as likely to raise her kids well as anyone else.

Generally the accepted wisdom on here is if you think what someone has is "rubbish" one tends to qualify the statement with the reasons why 'gawid.
