Google Earth. First a serious question, then if I show you mine will you show me yours?

Post 1

Deep Doo Doo

Anyone tried Google Earth? I'm quite getting into it, but something has stumped me. Can I post a clickable link, for example on h2g2, that will take a user with GE installed to the part of the map I want them to see?

I know I can quote the co-ordinates to someone and if they put them into GE they'll get the required result, but that seems long-winded. I can save the location as an *.kml file and locate it on a server something like this: http://www.h2g2.dataskip.co.uk/U1263973/DDD.kml but clicking the link only gives the HTML.

Anyone know?

Failing that, for a bit of fun my co-ordinates are

37 08 05.28 N, 8 32 02.74 W

if you wanna see a fuzzy image of where I live. (Cut and paste into GE)

Anyone else gonna show me theirs?

Still not fully at ease with GE myself, but for now the idea of a map of researchers try A5076614

Ðeep Ðoo Ðoo you live in Portiãmo too? smiley - winkeye

I found you can move out, and that reduces the pixel effect, but best of all we can send an image by email in JPG format. And to think no so long ago there were companies making a big deal about being able to sell you an arial view of your own house.

There's a Google Map website which uses the same maps as Google Earth and allows you to cut and paste a link into a browser. But it's not as good as Google Earth. It's quite laborious to zoom in and out, and you can't do things like having a direction other than North at the top, or an inclined view, or buildings, or lots of other things.

Hell, I'm from Portimao too!!! Do we have a little commune here that I don't know about?? I know it's not the most exciting city on earth, but it must be worth a mention!!!

I'm fascinated by threads like this. I know there are security issues, but - for me - it's an amazing experience being able to zoom in from such a height.

Sadly my home is in low-res, but I can let you have a high-res co-ordinate of my place of work:

51 49 46.42 N 2 15 45.05 W

...in fact, they're the co-ordinates of my usual parking space. Amazing stuff.

Perhaps if you set your browser to open .kml files using Google Earth?

I can't get Google Earth on this computer, but I know that my longitude is just a couple of seconds away from 0.

I love the way you can cut and paste these grid references into GE, and watch it leap from one place to another.
This is my home - mine's the one at the end with the slide and stuff in the garden:
53°46'21.23" N 0°17'25.83" W

And here is where I post from when I'm at work:
53°44'38.17" N 0°21'28.35" W

And, if you are at all interested - probably not, but hey, if you're bored - zoom right in on the centre of this, and witness a piece of history:
53°45'37.33" N 0°18'23.77" W

At the time this particular photo was taken, I was visiting my sister - the silver car in the centre is my old Mondeo.
And here is where it parked now...
53°44'43.55" N 0°14'33.48" W

Gnomon - time to move on

Is there any way of copying the latitude and longitude from Google Earth, or do you have to write them out on a piece of paper?

I can see them at the bottom of the screen, but I can't cut and paste them from there.

Well, I've put a pin in my home, and then copied the co-ords from the properties of the pin. That works. There's probably a far cleverer way of doing it, though.

And if you're really interested in bits of history, how about this:

I'll have to wait until I get home - damn boring terminals at work!

As for copying the co-ordinates, I use pencil and paper, but then have to copy, paste and edit someone else's co-ordinates, as I haven't a clue how to get the degrees symbol!
Any ideas?

You don't need the degree symbol. Spaces will do. Look at postings 6 and 7 of this conversation for example which work.

I am not using my home computer right now, so I don't have Googlearth at my immediate disposal, so I can't look at all those coordinates. My guess is that the Dutch Sunbather is somewhere among the top 13 smiley - winkeye
If you don't know the Dutch Sunbather yet, someone will probably give you the coordinates rather soon...
