Every political party has a life cycle and perhaps the tories are coming to the end of theirs....perhaps the lib Dem lot may be the next opposition ??? A good thing or a frightening thought?

Well the last time a part died it was the Liberals... I wonder if there are any parralles today?
Personally I think if there are it is more with "New Labour", you know they have changed orientation (like the Liberals did under Asquith and Lloyd George) and had a reformist agenda... when they wear themselves out (I think they have one more election win in them) then what happens?

Good thing. At least the Lib Dems aren't tied to the Bush family's apron strings.
No offence Barbara.

Mark the Strange Posted Oct 30, 2003
Every political party has a life cycle - fine point.
Labour went though their changes, the liberals have changes at least twice and the Tories today are decended from the old tories of the 19th century, as the liberals are from the whigs.
Some maybe the process of evolution just goes on?

Behind Geddon's wall, The Wall of death! (chemist-assassin, keeper of the hooded swan) Posted Oct 30, 2003
Having just returned from earning a daily crust to find an obsene number of postings, I wish to amend my comment of 23 hours and 150-odd postings ago. The current Tory party is NOT a Soap opera, Its a Whitehall farce (for those of you of a tender age and not aware of your cultural heritage, This involved a ludicrous story line and lots of men running around the stage with their trousers around their ankles!!) I'd forgotten (or rather attempted to expunge it from the racial memory) about the prisons fiasco and the P*ll Tax. As a Right-wing socialist (Certain things should be run in the national interest not for profit) the Paroxisms of the current bunch of cretins show all the leadership skills of the average gnat.Just think, now the Tories have made themselves totally unelectable, they will have to go through this all again, when Howerd's way has to resign the night after the next election. Watch the vermin crawl out of the woodwork then.

Article in todays Scotsman
http://www.thescotsman.co.uk/politics.cfm?id=1199402003 about how the Lib Dems will be targetting HJowards seat at the next general election now that would be fun. Especially as there is talk of him retiring after the election. Memories of Chris Patten

Geggs Posted Oct 31, 2003
Ken Clarke has ruled himself out of the running.
Which, to my mind, means that the only major player not to saying anything yet is Anne Widdicombe.
And we all know that her and Micheal Howard really don't like each other.

All we need in one Maverick. Even a 163 to one vote would hgave to go to the party membership.
Shame Alan Clark is dead.

Flanker Posted Oct 31, 2003
Interesting to note that in one tabloid this morning it quotes Mr Howard as saying less than a year ago "I will NEVER stand again for the leadership of the party".
So another case of a politician going back on his word. No he wouldn't do that surely..................

Flanker... what a thing to suggest.
Anyone see this week last night?
Personally I really enjoyed watching Dianne Abbott squirm!

Today's Torygraph is full of how the Tories are suddenly revitalised into a vibrant opposition. They're dreaming.
I'm sure they said that after IDS got in. And look how that turned out.

Clive the flying ostrich: Amateur Polymath | Chief Heretic. Posted Oct 31, 2003
mmm ...that was good.
S'pity it's broadcast so late*...on the beeb you can stream off the internet live BBC news 24, Newsnight and Question Time & The Politics Show. The file is refreshed each week so if you are busy, not a problem.
The only glaring ommisson from this Quartet is 'This Week' - which not only lacks it's own website, in the manner of all the above, but consequently doesn't have a streaming facility either.
Were it not for this fact, I could probably sell my T.V and never buy a T.V licence again.
*no signal in this area apart from an ariel port in the kitchen so if I want to watch it I have to go sit on hard backed chairs rather than setting my TV's timer to automatically switch off and let Andrew neils sardonic tones soothe me to sleep.

Next week though we shant get Plottillo and "Do as I say not as I do" Abbott...
Shame really as I think they actually have a good TV chemistry for that sort of thing.
