They say that an elephant never forgets. But what does an elephant have to remember?

I don't know what they have to remember, but whatever you do, don't think about the pink elephant.

Elephants have to remember to turn off the gas, feed the cats, and water the house plants. They also, and perhaps more importantly have to remember that it is 50 years ago since two guys wondered into teh Eagle pub, on bennets street Cambridge, UK, and announced they had discovered the structure of DNA.

What every elephant should keep in its personal organiser:
"Good morning ___(Elephant name here)____
Today, please remember:
(1) That you are an elephant. You are not: a lemur, a postman or an oil rig.
(2) What happened last time you thought you were an oil rig.
(3) You are spatio-temporally contiguous and very very big. So you can't use the London Underground.
(4) If you see a person pointing something at you, run.

actually - I have a plan to test the theory that an elephant never forgets, I just have to get some money together and hope that the elephant lives in the same riverbed as before (and have a really good driver with me...)

The location of the distant underground chamber where there're good salty rocks to lick and the precise positioning of the narrow bits of the pitch-dark tunnels on the way, to save all that head-banging. (In reference to the wonderful film sequence in the recent BBC 'Life of Mammals')
How to hold a paintbrush
There's an elephant art conservation project working in some Asian countries to provide an alternative activity for elephants now they're not being emplyed in the logging industry. The paintings are then sold (at surprisingly high prices) to help pay for their care

That is the most amazing and bizarre thing I have read in a long long time.
I presume the majority are abstract expressionists?
