TOTP Censoring Russian Lesbians
Phryne- 'Best Suppurating Actress' Posted Feb 16, 2003
some countries still have no *official* age on girl/girl partnerships. (Including this one, until the reforms when through.)

Yes... I know that... I ment of-age as with regard to the fantasies of male audiance they hope to covet...
Lesbianism has never been regulated in this country... the story being that Queen Victoria refused to give asent to legislation against it because she refused to accept that such desire existed in women...

Is this the song that goes "everything she said...going through my head" or something? I had no idea they were Russian. It's a good song. The video wasn't censured here in Norway. But of course, we're notoriously broad-minded...

In some senses, which to Norway. However I read that guns are not permitted to be shown on TV.
It's a much better song than most on the radio, so I reckon it'd do well without the scandal.
I think Queen V. was being sarcastic... more likely that the men making the laws thought no upstanding English lady would sink that low. There was no official law but since a woman could be prosecuted for indecently assaulting a girl if she was under 16, it was taken to be 16 in practice (after the 1865 age laws) which is now official.

I hear so many girls complaining that their boyfriends love the video, whereas 'girls don't like watching gay men, do they?'
...it's well-known that they do, hence the preponderence of Slash fiction.

Plenty of guns on Norwegian TV... The restrictions on carrying guns are, OTOH, a lot stricter than, say, in the US. And commercials for alcohol or tobacco are in fact forbidden!

Censure of advertising, then. (Not that I am in favour of alcohol or tobacco advertising, there has to be a balance. IMHO censoring videos like this is pointless.)
(It was a book about Scandinavian Black Metal, detailing how Norway is in general very peaceful 'an episode of a cartoon show was cut because it featured a gun'.)

I wouldn't say Norway had especially libral culture... the entire Scandanavian sexually libral stereo-type eminates from legislation passed in that region for the purpose of promoting child birth amonst ethnicly more acceptable person during the 50's-70's... hardly a libral culture in spirit...

That's news to me... What legislation was that? In fact Norwegians are rather un-liberal in some areas, but not when it comes to homosexuality. except some religious fundamentalists, of course. Basically I suppose we have good and bad sides, like most people...

hmm...
at any rate, the BBC action is rather feeble. I saw the video on The Box (oh, the shame...) and thought, is that all it is?
As for saying the song should be completely pulled...

Tis a funky tune, I was pleasantly surprised!
The BBC definitely don't seem to be able to define a 'standard', I don't see how there's a worry of young girls getting corrupted by watching the video, there's a darn sight worse on telly before the watershed.
Though slightly more disconcerting... I read they were 'discovered' by their child psychologist, any truth in that?

It's an excellent clip, and an excellent song. Over here, at least, it wasn't censored. Shown on national tv at ten in the morning on a Saturday in fact...

" read they were 'discovered' by their child psychologist, any truth in that?"
I think the word you are looking for is "manufactured" rather than discovered - normal stuff, auditions etc, by a "child psychologist" who according to some reports (truth unknown) has used "casting couch " techniques.
Also, according to some net rumours, the girls don't get on at all off stage.
There are enough rumours, storys, alleged truths about these girls to think that our very own Max Clifford may be involved, or a Russian equivalent.

Well...I think this song has intrinsic value, simply because it actually communicates something that may strike a chord with young bi-homosexuals..I dealt with these sorts of tensions when I confronted my 'bi-ness' and later when I 'came out' to my parents recently. *shrug* In any case, I appreciate it. I'll shut up now..

In roughly the same timeslot the BBC are showing "Buffy", where Willow and Tara have been known to "make out" on a regular basis... In an upcoming episode they end up naked in bed together for most of the episode; it's a major plot development, so they can hardly cut it out...
(Series 6, Episode 19, "Seeing Red", if memory serves... )

I like that song and I got to liike 'on radio' before seeing the video clip. The video has been thrashed (played alot) between programmes on channel 4 over here (NZ) - uncensored ofcourse
It's nothing to get worked up over

I dont watch top of the pops, but i was surprised to hear that they censored that particular video, theyre not even really kissing for gads sake!,,in fact it all seems to be done quite tastefully ,and as a parent(hes 5) i dont find it offensive at all ,and you really do see a lot worse all the time.Theres a definate double standard going on..which is just wrong, in any situation.

It wasn't the vid, it was a 'live' (ie in the studio!) performance last week, replayed on big screen monitors this week. The first week they showed a trail for next week's programme, the next week they cut away to two people in the audience (whether they were 'real' people or TotP 'dancers' I don't know)
The beeb obviously filmed the whole performance, so I wouldn't be surprised if it is used unchanged at some point in the future, but I don't see why they couldn't have filmed two performances, one with, one without. In the Goode Olde Dayes the TotP director could actually 'direct' performances, and have a say about what happened on stage. I suppose that nowadays performers are a bit too precious about things.
I doubt it's girl-on-girl kissing per se that's the problem - it's the context. When did you last see girl/boy snogging on TotP? Even if the people are really in a relationship (and personally I doubt it with these two) then on stage in the middle of a song, they're just doing it for the reaction. In dramas there is a better 'context' for what is happening.
And while I'm perfectly happy that teens of this age may be aware of their sexuality (whatever their orientation) to be encouraged to demonstrate it to make money makes me uncomfortable....
...but all that said, I do think TotP is not doing a particularly good job at the moment - did you see te Cheeky Girls' last performance? Underwear, and a camera lingering at crotch height - so much for consistency.

The shows producers were probably terrified of another uproar like the one over the gay kiss in Casualty (I don't watch this I'm going on the complaints posted on the Points of view message board http://www.bbc.co.uk/pov ).
I like the song...and I like the video (although it was even more entertaining watching a male friend watching it "that was a breast! you can see through her shirt!!!" and lots of phwoaring)
