IIRC, in the original series, male officers were 'Mister' (Sulu, Chekov et al.), female crew members were addressed by rank. So Uhura was addressed as Lieutenant, Rand was Yeoman. I'm not sure what they did in subsequent spin-offs, but the number of women with decent-sized roles was limited. I think they were all referred to by rank, too.

I agree, though. Mr. Saavik is just wrong. Makes me wonder if the character was originally meant to be male.

I was originally going to put 'the number of women with decent-sized parts", but I knew somebody would get smutty over that. I hoped I could ward off the smut by saying 'roles' instead. I should have known bettersmiley - rolleyes

~*~I'm not sure what they did in subsequent spin-offs, but the number of women with decent-sized roles was limited.~*~

Every single one of the spin-offs had more female characters than TOS did. Case in point:

Original Series--Uhura. And, for all of two movies, Saavik.

Next Generation--Beverly Crusher, Deanna Troi, Doctor Pulaski, Ro Laren, (debatably) Tasha Yar.

Deep Space 9--Kira Nerys, Jadzia Dax, Ezri Dax, Kai Winn, Cassady Yates, The Female Changeling, (sometimes) Zial, (sometimes) Leeta.

Voyager--Captain Janeway, B'Elanna Torres, Kes, Seven of Nine.

Enterprise--Hoshi Sato and T'Pol.

That could be. But it doesn't forgive them, since **while they were filming** she obviously **wasn't.**

What does "IIRC" mean?

I'm pretty sure Saavik was never intended to be male - in an early version of the script for Star Trek III she was to be left behind on Vulcan because she was expecting Spock's child...

Next Generation: Crusher and Pulaski were always addressed as Doctor, Deanna Troi as Counsellor, Ro Laren and Tasha Yar by their rank (Ensign, Lieutenant).

Deep Space 9: Kira and the two Daxes were referred to by their ranks. The others weren't Star Fleet/military, so the situation is different.

Voyager: Janeway and Torres were addressed by their ranks, Kes and Seven had no ranks.

Enterprise: Hoshi and T'Pol were addressed by their ranks, IIRC, although I think Captain Archer sometimes just called T'Pol by her name.

So, I rest my case. Female Star Fleet officers are generally addressed by rank and Mr. Saavik is just wrong.smiley - tongueout

Oh, and you forgot Lieutenant Valeris in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. She was addressed by her rank, too.

How come, given the huge amount of empty space in atoms, it hurts so much when I bang my knee on things?

Cuz you're effectively smacking into a magic forcefield. Your electrons and theirs are both negative and push each other away, so it's like banging into an invisible brick wall.

Ah but... when you push two magnets together, the repelling force increases exponentially as the distance decreases. Why isn't my knee gently pushed away from the coffee table?

I really, really hate the sound of a heartbeat. I don't know why, but I just can't stand listening to it.smiley - yuk

Why must so many film soundtracks use it to build tension? If it goes on for longer than a few seconds, I turn the sound off.
