A Researcher has called me a NAZI C**T. - How can I stop this?
Whisky Posted Dec 6, 2002
Hmm, theoretically the posting was in breach of the house rules so it was correctly hidden. However, having had a look at the thread in question, it's whole 'raison d'être' is for various, normally polite and contientious, researchers to insult all and sundry.... I notice that a newbie who recently strayed into the thread _was_ treated respectfully (until the purpose of the thread was explained to him anyway ).
I think if you spoke to the researcher in question outside of that thread, (try posting to their personal space) you might find them a completely different person - and they might well apologize for unintentional offence caused.
In all, I'd try and advise you not to take anything said in that one particular thread to heart. - Although it may not always be in the best possible taste - it is all meant in fun. And opinions expressed in that one thread should not be taken to be the actual opinion of the person posting.
Try talking to the person in question on their personal space and see what happens

And if they really meant it, they will continue postings like this, with more postings hidden, and in the end another banishing.
So for the moment, try to find out whether it was a joke gone too far, or a real insult, like Whisky suggested.

Talk to him in private. It certainly seems over the top to press charges for an insult, posted in a forum made for insulting each other. Even if it went too far.

To say that sort of thing is beyond humour, and can hardly be founded on much truth as he can't possibly know you that well?
Is this person new here? He ought to be reprimanded and then invited to continue contributing but in a civil way, if he wishes. A complete ban would be very harsh at this point and would not give him a chance to benefit from the site.
Over the years I have noticed that people often barge in and start complaining about others here and about the site in general, and then calm down and become "normal" and accepted researchers. It takes a while to find your way around and get the feel of the place.
We are unusual in that it is possible to have conversations on subjects which touch on taboos without being offensive, but taking a critical standpoint. Coming here from most other communities on the web is often a culture shock for people.
Nonetheless, insults like that are upsetting and I hope you get this sorted out.

That's definitely outside the scope of even such a thread. Since we're now on reactive moderation, if anything else like that crops up, just hit the yikes button.
Talking to them might help, but then again might not, and you're under no obligation to, although asking them to stop is a good idea in case it's a misunderstanding.

Hi
If you have concerns about individual postings then you should yikes them.
If the Researcher in question continues to insult other Researchers and behave in a way contrary to the House Rules, you should get in touch with either Mina or myself. Calling someone a Nazi is not acceptable, even in a thread were insulting people is the norm.

Superdogmonkey, to answer your question, no this sort of behaviour is not acceptable on h2g2 or the BBC, that is why the posting was removed after we were alerted to it. Though technically we should remove your first posting as it contains the offensive text, though admittedly with some context.

..I'm an impartial party and this is none of my business, but it looks to me that someone hijacked T'mershi's account there - it's a gross misappropriation of his style, he doesn't sign his postings. Also there's a capital M in T'Mershi written there, which is clearly wrong
I've never spoken to T so wouldn't know but intuition tells me it wasn't him/her; figured I should say so.. just my tuppence.

Sounds like T'mershi. No one else was using curse-words in that thread.
Sense of relief though. Thought it was me being talked about then...

Yes, that´s it...someone hijacked my space...
Arrhemm....no, actually I wrote that piece wich was a response to this post from Mrs. the wife:
Which I find not only not in the spirit of the thread, as it goes for the man and not for the ball, but also unecessary patronizing and obnoxious. To me it looked liked Mrs. the wife thought she could have an easy go at some poor foreign s****r.It seemed plain mean spirited to me. And then topping it off with,
Instead of to alert the moderators of some "gross injustice" I chose to pick up the glove, take the challenge and respond. Then once I got going I went to town, I admit it was a bit over the top, and I even thought of turning myself in, but thought moderators would see it soon enough anyhow, and I´ve been here long enough to know it would get removed--pront But it looked like Mrs. the wife both understood my english and could be insulted. Had someone talked to me like that IRL I would have acted the same way. Last time I did was about 10 years ago, so both IRL and in communities, I can assure it is a one in a decade reaction.

T'mershi - are you a complete LOON? That is what the thread is all about...you know...INSULTING people. There is no way I would have responded to anything (even being called a sexless freak by Tube) with the insult you used. It is all in good humour...none of it is meant. I think you need to go and re-read the first posting on the thread...

Tube, why are you saying sorry? Don't flatter yourself in thinking I took it personally...
Can we go back to the old thread now pleeeeeeeeeeease?

Saturnine:
Obviously you have your limits too, as you think my posting was too much, even on a thread that´s supposed to insult. So can you imagine thet other perple also has a limit?
Moron.
Be consistent.

Can someone tell me who made the first post to this thread? It wasn't U211101 by any chance was it?
Thanks,

Never assume. I just dislike uncreativity...
*Nazi C**t* is about as stupid, dull and misogynist as you can get...
I mean, is that as good as you get? Is that the real honest best you can do?
If I were you, I'd be ashamed...
