I love David Lean - particularly 'This Happy Breed' and the Cohen Brothers. I was a bit perturbed when I heard they were remaking the Ladykillers with Tom Hanks in Alec Guiness's role, but if any one can do it they can.

You can call me TC

There have been lots of surveys on this subject on H2G2. I'm glad we're being asked again, because it's always a good subject.

My favourite films still remain

-Commitments
-Back to the Future I
-Terminator I
-Apollo 13

I also love Tarantino, and silly things like Blake Edwards for a belly laugh.

I don't usually pay much attention to the director. I suppose they're doing well if I've heard of them. So:
Steven Spielberg (of course)
Peter Jackson
Chris Columbus
The Coen brothers (although I don't think I've ever seen one of their films)
Tim Burton
George Lucas

The film that stands out in my mind as the best I have ever seen is 'Princess Mononoke', directed by a guy who is a complete legend in Japan, but whose name I cannot remember! His latest film came out there last year, but it takes a long time for Japanese Anime to come over here, if they ever get here, so...

Hayao Mayazaki was the name! 'Spirited Away' is the American title of his new film, released there in 2002, and I do wish I could see it.
Having seen Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey, I have to say that I think Kubrick is overrated.

Ooh, ooh, ooh... Kubrick is not over rated it's more that meadia hype doesn't focus on what his true strengths as a director were a clockwork Orange is notorious for it's violence which is an insult both to original work that it is based upon and to brilliant and intelligent way it was transferred to film both visually and in that particular film the auditary strngths...

I really feel like telling you are missing out on something wonderful if you can't appreciate Kubrick... but I have no wish to insult...

I'm not fond of 2001 but that's more about the work it's based on than Kubricks direction... the opening sequence smiley - sigh
