Sorry OGM - After 2 years of my H2G2 membership without posting anything. I strike it lucky on my first attempt.
I have to say it is exhilerating.

Iwould say that even though Angus has been *accused* of illegal drug use, he hasn't had a trial, been found guilty, etc. which, by the sounds of it, Johnny Vaughan was for dealing. And surely my libellous post was most libellous towards myself.

That was sort of my point Egon, it seems crazy to replace somebody who has been accused but not been convicted of a minor drug crime with somebody who has been convicted of a major one!

Yes, I was just agreeing with you in a rather shambolic, half-assed round about manner.

Depends. If you think prison is there to reform then he has served his time, paid his debt to society and learned his mistake. Therefore he is allowed to let bygones be bygones and do what he likes. If, on the other hand you think once a criminal, always a criminal then he is just the same as someone who has not been punished, all criminals should be locked up for ever as they never reform and he really shouldn't be out one the streets never mind on TV.
I tend to come somewhere in the middle and treat things on a case by case basis (I hope). In this case, he appears to have reformed, thus putting him in camp one and he should be allowed to put his past behind him and move on.

But that doesn't change the fact that he is a *convicted* criminal, while Deayton hasn't even been *charged* with anything yet.

I agree about the reform and rehabillitation stuff, but I am assuming that the bbc hasn't sacked Angus for having consenting sex, therefore it must be the tenuous drug connection. As he hasn't been charged/convicted with anything one must assume that the beeb won't touch anyone that has anything to do with drugs regardless of convictions etc, which would exclude JV - erm, except that he has his own bbc chat show. This all seems rather perverse.

In Angus' case, there are few things that I would fear more as a punishment for my misdemeanours than a TV recording session with Paul Merton and Ian Hislop for company.
After a couple of episodes of HIGNFY I think Angus will have been punished enough.

PQ Posted Oct 31, 2002
I think he was sacked because it is a news quiz, had it been buzzcocks or one of the other derivatives it wouldn't have mattered but his private life was dominating the subject of the show (if that makes sense)...I also think if it had been less intensive (ie less like the tabloids had been storing up all the dirt on him awaiting the chance to publish it all over a short period) it wouldn't have mattered.
I don't think the criminal/love rat allegations made any difference...it wasn't the content it was the volume and the fact that the show is about the media?

Looks like the moderators are having trouble keeping up with us. Now up to 6 postings hidden on the previous page.
Good work guys

I think ipoiinted that out as well, but it may have been hidden. Are we allowed to mention said ex-Blue Peter presenter with same name as a Scottish rugby player?

Don't mention anything!!! I have started to edit my own postings prior to posting. It will save the moderators some work.
Here is my latest: -
I think ***** and **** are very likely to be *****. It would be interesting if ************ and ******* are **********. Don't you ******.

The Ghost of Polidari Posted Oct 31, 2002
And all this after the controversy a couple of years ago about Richard Bacon. Maybe it's a thing with male Blue Peter presenters? What's next, d'you suppose - Peter Purves in sheep shocker? Peter Duncan and Mark Curry, the porn tapes they hoped you'd never see? And what really did John Noakes mean when he said 'Get Down Shep'???
* Wonders how long that posting will last....

The media cry 'public interest' with these stories. So they plaster The Hamilton's and Mick Hucknall on the front page but ignore Jonathan King and Gary Glitter until they are pulled by the Police

Orcus Posted Oct 31, 2002
Can I just point out that they haven't appointed anyone yet so a big argument about double standards in picking Johnny Vaughn is perhaps a little premature?
You can name John Leslie now. Or at least you can on the other thread anyhow
Key: Complain about this post
