The best sit-coms of all time
Mu Beta Posted Sep 20, 2002
It does actually work out as 10 if we don't include Hancock or Peter Kayt, neither of which are really sitcoms (they'll never make the top 20 page while I'm running it anyway ).
For any SOAP fans who are interested, it's just 4 points outside the top 20, now.

I'd forgotten Rising Damp as well. Looking bak at my list it would fall outside the top ten anyway, so I won't confuse Master B by updating it.

I can understand saying that league of gentlemen isnt a sitcom (its about 6 sitcoms running simulteaneously) but pheonix nights can only be described as a situation comedy
and as I've got about 2 votes left I'd like to put one toward pheonix nights.

What on Earth is Phoenix Nights, is it that poor excuse for channel 4 programme to advertise for.

What about "Chelmsford 1-2-3"?
The name has slipped my mind, but what about the BBC2 sitcom with Samantha Janus, the ginger tosser and the agoraphobic bloke, Matt sharing a flat. The 2nd series had me in stitches ...

Game On - that was it. Great stuff.
Can we have all the sitcoms mentioned on the voting page/entry. Then we can make an informed voting choice.
What system are we using? "First past the post" or "proportional representation"?
How about a knockout competition, where sitcoms go head to head with votes being cast for up to 5 days. Winner progresses to next round.
Anyone mentioned Cheers, or Taxi yet? I think they were really just rehashes of the same idea, which themselves seem to come from MASH.
How about some of those 80s US sitcoms ... Family Ties, Home Improvement, the Golden Girls, Diff'rent Strokes *cringes at thought of last two* ("What you talkin' about Willis?")

Pheonix Nights = dodgy working mens type club taken over and managed by Peter Kay (or rather peter kay playing an angry man in a wheelchair) very funny but takes a little getting into (especially if you havent visited any working mens clubs in the north)

Fawlty Towers
Blackadder
Only Fools and Horses
Dad's Army
Father Ted
The Young Ones

M*A*S*H

I'll probably come up with 10 completely different ones in half an hour (or after I've read the backlog!)

Okay - nobody told me they had to be in order - here goes
1. The Young Ones
2. Blackadder
3. Fawlty Towers
4. Yes Minister/Prime Minister
5. M*A*S*H (still think it should qualify - who cares where the situation comes from?)
6. Police Squad
7. Red Dwarf
8. Black Books
9. Dad's Army
10. News Radio (only got a 23:30 slot on ITV but was very funny)
11. Soap
12. Porridge
13. Only Fools and Horses
14. Frasier
15. Friends
16. The Drew Carey Show (well, I like it!)
17. Father Ted
18. Cheers
19. Hancock's Half Hour
20. Mork and Mindy.
And if I really can't have M*A*S*H then stick Coupling on the end!

Late to the thread, but....
Black Books
MASH
Phoenix Nights
The Office
Steptoe & Son
Fawlty Towers
The Simpsons
Spaced
Open All Hours
I could never get into the American sit-coms, except Mork & Mindy. (but then again I was only 10)
The Simpsons is one of the finest, darkest, most satirical and funniest programmes America has ever produced. Woo Hoo!

Did you know that when MASH was orginally shown on the BBC, the laughter was removed from the soundtrack!!!
