What is the meaning of the Word Thursday?
Ek* this space intentionally left blank *ki Posted Apr 18, 2002
It is one of the many days of the week named after Norse gods ...
Tiw - Tuesday
Woton - Wednesday
Thor - Thursday
Frida - Friday
Saturday I don't know but I suspect it's a bastardisation of the word Sabbath day (please correct me if I'm wrong) and then Sunday after the sun and Monday after the Moon ...
If you really are having issues with Thursday then you might want to head across and have a read of the Manifesto for the Campaign to Rename Thursday Thing (A516647) ... the mere mention of the words above has brought me out in a muck sweat ... I think I need to sit down ...

Just a few corrections on the names of the gods and the days. Showing them in Danish makes more sense.
Monday=mandag=probably Moon Day but not too sure.
Tuesday=tirsdag=Tyr's Day. God of war
Wednesday=onsdag=Odin's day(Odin is also know at Wotun sometimes.
Thursday=Torsdag=Tor's Day=Tor or Thor, you know him
Friday=Fredag=Frey or his Sister Freya=Fertility gods.
I don't really know about sunday and saturday.

Saturday is Saturn's day, Sunday is Sun day and Monday is definitely Moon day. In Germany they have Sonntag and Montag (Sun day and Moon day). France has Lundi (Moon day), too. I don't know why a planet crept in to a list of Norse gods, but Saturday probably dates from Roman times.

Yeah, there were plenty of other gods they could have named it after. Heimdalday or Idunday.

In Roman mythology, Saturn is the god of agriculture. The associated Greek god, Cronus, was the son of Uranus and Gaia and the father of Zeus (Jupiter). Saturn is the root of the English word "Saturday".
Saturday was a day of the week, before the planet was named after it.

Frida is alternatively known as Frigga.
That's not relevant, but funny.
