Is the Golden Jubilee going to be the biggest flop ever?

Not if the Pistols are no 1.

At least the Queen earns a few bob for the British public by ripping of the tourists. What I can't stand is the way people fawn over her free-loading mother.
Unbelievably, this rubbish made the New Zealand midday news today.
The Queen Mother has had to cancel an official engagement because she is suffering from a bug that has confined her to her room.
I guess I must have a bug as well. Excuse me while I vomit.

There is a good point to it all, the Monday and Tuesday are both bank holidays, which means its a good time to go on holiday. Only 3 days come off the annual leave, if you go for a week. We're going to Brussels the return plane fare for both of us is just over £100, much cheaper than Eurostar - good old Ryanair. On the way back, we leave at 4.45 and return home at 4.45, never done that before. One day I'l have to go backwards in time, and run around manically!

I sort of (note: sort of) feel sorry for the Queen, since there's no neutrality. Choice of fawning adulation or rabid dislike. Or rather, I feel sorry for anyone in that position, not specific pity for the gal herself.
But the QM- she should be made into compost.
I reckon she's actually dead and stuffed, and manipulated by strings. In a way I hope she is immortal since there will be so much SAP when she finally gives out... embarrassing. (However, they say she gets her longevity from the Monster of Glamis, which is certainly something to ponder.)

The nicest thing is the response some borough councils have given when asked if they'll be commemorating the event.
"No." :oD
And then there's Mr Livingstone and his Golden Buses. He really is doing his best to piss off his supporters :o)

Those among us who are cynical would ask whether he still has any supporters. But me, no, never. I'm not cynical!

really? THAT was removed?
I think the idea that she (QM) is descended from a monster is a bit worse.
Wonder what would happen if... oh, say, she fell over and was taken to casualty...?

Was it reference to the David Ikes view that they are all lizards!!
Eddie Izzard does a great Queen Mum sketch. Thats a thought, what happens if the Queen Mum dies on the Jubilee?

I'll be celebrating the Golden Jubilee by playing the Manic Street Preacher's song 'Repeat' at full volume. Not that great a song, but I like the sentiment

Not me. But we get a day off work which is nice.
But then I don't really hate them either. Just don't find them interesting.
The Queen mother is clearly immortal - as is the Queen. Hope Charlie isn't I went on a tour of Glamis Castle where she grew up once and the guide showed us a portrait of an older brother of hers -he died in 1898! She will never die.

No doubt the Golden Jubilee will be enjoyed greatly by those in society who still enjoy that sort of thing and a lot of tourists.
I'm against the royal family, they don't serve any purpose. We should take some of their homes and stop giving them money. If they are smart then they'll be able to make enough money from their celebrity status.
It's not right that we keep the monarchy just for the tourists.

I'm not sure, but I think that the Queen no longer gets any taxpayers' money. She does own the Post office (a.k.a. Consignia) and a couple of other things, which ought to pull in a fair wad of cash.
THe royal family do serve a purpose, though. A diplomatic purpose. They spend all their time running around the world, visiting people and reminding them that Britain still exists and has arrangements, etc. with them. Blair seems to have usurped that recently, but he can't keep doing it forever.

Yep, they run all over the world so Phillip can find new people to offend in new and interesting ways.
I have no particular interest in them beyond a sort of alternative soap opera. The dotty old grand-mother, the stern matriach, the patently mad father, lurking in the garden shed until it's time to lurch into the camera, shout 'bloody foreigners' and disappear into the undergrowth. The frustrated hippy son and the unsuitable partner. The anorexic skeleton in the closet. The ex-daughter in law that no one talks to but can't get away from. The upright son in the Forces. The vaguely iffy son who who wants to be an actor, dahling, but settled for making dodgy tv instead, with the wife who epitomises the sleaze of the era perfectly.
I take it back, take 'em out and have 'em put down like horses. Or better yet, hunt 'em like foxes. They seem to like that type of thing.

No, the civil list still exists and the Queen, Queen Mum, Charlie, Andy, Eddy, Mags, Anne etc all still get well about the national minimum wage courtesy of our taxes. As of a few years ago Queenie deigned to start paying taxes herself from the money we give her.

'Fraid not. The Royal Mail was state owed until recently, and now a few bits have been (at least part) privatised, notably British Telecom, Post Office Counters, Parcel Force.
Personally i think we should privatise the Royal Family, if they do so much good for industry and tourism let the private sector pay for it.

I think the Golden Jubilee will flop, but we'll be show dozens of old people dancing around in the streets to show what a "success" it is.
I'm an anti-monarchist. I dislike many members of the family, who strike me as ungrateful snobs. There are some members of the family who seem OK, I'm not some stupid revolutionary who kids himself they should all be shot for some fate of birth. The thing is they are a genuine anachronism. A taxpayer-supported aristocratic family has no ideological support in modern thinking of both Left and Right. They are only defended in this country, in my opinion, by romanticists who can't let go of the past.

I wonder if 'Princess Di - The Musical', currently a "smash hit" in Germany, will move to London's West End for the Jubillee?
