Why do people drink?

I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they get up in the morning, that as good as they're going to feel all day.

Speaking as someone who was completely teetotal for many years (including the Uni ones ) I'd say that with pubs and social drinking so much part of the British culture it's more a question of 'Why don't people drink?' over here. I made that choice for my own reasons and was constantly teased and derided for it, very occasionally congratulated - all of which used to irritate me intensely. Drink or don't, whichever works for you at the time. It's perfectly possible to have a great time without drinking and it's perfectly possible to have a great time if you do - and still remember it
I drink these days because I found flavours of alcohol I enjoy
and realised I could drink in moderation, have a relaxed good time, and not have to end up with a nasty hangover, damage my health or completely lose control of my actions.
Drinking to excess repeatedly and deliberately is not a good thing though for the individual or people around them.

thanks everyone...most of that just confirmed what i thought...
a few of my friends drink to get drunk, and i disagree with that, and frequently tell them so, but that makes me sound like a preacher, but it's only cos i'm worried about them. they have had bad experiences, but they don't stop. i've nbever actually been drunk, although (apparently) most of the people my age have (i'm 16). i can understand people drinking for the taste, although i haven't tastede any alcohol i've liked yet...

I drink quite often (well, not everyday, but at least once or twice a week) and I have never been really either (I'm 23).
