Hitch Hikers Computer Game

OK. So in 1983 Douglas wrote the Hitch Hikers computer game, which contained loads of material that wasn't in the books or Radio series, it was released in '84 by Infocom, my mate Jol had a copy on his computer, and used to slip me print outs during double physics of new little bits of text he'd discovered the night before instead of doing his homework. Great stuff.
My question is, has anyone rigged up a PC version? Is it downloadable on line (it must be all of 42K after all!)
Failing that does anyone still have a working copy of the game? What computer did it come for? Was it Spectrum or Commodore, or both? If anyone has a spectrum copy i'd love one.
If no-one has produced an online copy, perhaps we should here - as a wee tribute to the big man, and prevent this chapter of HHGG being forgotten.

Hey there guys,
I've been trying to get hold of a copy of this game for ages and I thought that you might have answered my prayers. Unfortunately, having gone to the site, I keep getting a message about Angelfire not allowing remote loading and I can't get it. Could one of you email it to me?
My address is (moderator, please do not remove this address) is [email protected].
Thanks.

Moderators aren't supposed to remove e-mail addresses - in theory they're allowed. That's why there's a little bit above the box you type forum posts into that says about being careful when you post an e-mail address...

Hi,
Do you still want the game, the zipped file is 182 kb and that will double if i attach it to an email - do you have room in your in box? I'm ready to send. I've just sent a quick reply to your adress, just check you've recieved that and i'll fire the game off to you.
I pulled it down off Angelfire no problem, strange that, my computer usually takes the "sorry - no dice" option whenever it can.
It plays a little clunkily and is a bit willfull (but that's a good thing) but once you start to get into it you don't notice the play of it, you just roll with the humour (and as i say, it's willfullness).
Incidentally, does anyone know what formats the game came out in origonally and when?
i know it came out in 1984, which was the age of the Spectrum and the Commodore 64. And the douglasadams.com site (that's not an address right??) says it was also included in a best of infocom compenium - which i guess was the MS-Dos version dated 1987 that i'm sending you now (hopefully).

The game originally appeared for just about every computer around because the Infocom interpreter was pretty easy to port - I've had it running under at least half a dozen OSes.
Incidentally, the version you've got your hands on is probably in breach of copyright. The Java version on Douglas Adams' site isn't though .

I liked the original game because it came with a "Don't Panic" badge and peril-sensitive sunglasses.

Hi guys,
Does anyone have a version of the game that isn't infected with a virus that they could email me?
Cheers

To inconsistent moderator of post 14: That url is all over this website, and I've seen it in many conversation threads before. It was Douglas Adams' personal website.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/Search?searchstring=douglasadams.com&searchtype=forum&dosearch=Search+the+Conversation+Forums
will take you to 16 other conversation threads on h2g2 where the same URL was allowed, but which was removed from post 14 above.
Since that URL is not allowed here, maybe I can hint at it, in a way that has been commonly allowed in hundreds of other conversation threads.
In your browser, type the man's name, first and last, no middle initial, no space or hyphen between the names. Then type a dot or period. Then add the most common URL suffix (not the most common UK-associated suffix).
What a damned waste of time.
If all that crap above is censored, just do a search for "Douglas Adams" on any old search engine. Among the results it brings back, look for the link with his name most prominent in the URL. Go there, do a search for "game" and you'll find a free java version of the HHGttG text game, nothing to download.
