Hogg lived near the Loch of the Lowes, in the borders. A lovely spot! There's a monument to him there.
According to W***pedia,
'Hogg died in 1835 from hiccups. His last words: "It is a reproach to the faculty that they cannot cure the hiccup."'

hi night-eyes,
If you like Margaret Atwood you might like to try The Robber Bride - quite different from her darker stuff. Basically a story of friendship and betrayal involving four women in Toronto, three of whom have been left reeling by the fourth who was presumed dead (well, the other three had attended her funeral) until one day she walks back into their lives . . .
I'm presently reading The Hot Kid by Elmore Leonard, about gangsters in 1930's Oklahoma. Quote from the Independent - "Dialogue like broken glass, sharp and glittering" - which I agree with. A natural born story teller, quite an enjoyable read.

Leonard started out writing Westerns. They're well worth tracking down.

Two thing; Scruple by Jane Krantz because she did Princess Daisy and Lace and something by Agatha Christie with a card game; I don't get it because I don't play bridge and the rubs seem to be a clue!

Perdodo Street Station and The Scar by China Mieville. Both long slow stories, but if you're into that sort of thing great sci-fi.

I have three books on the go right now: a hefty book on psychology, aimed at US college students; A History of the Arab Peoples by Albert Hourani; Once in a House on Fire by Andrea Ashworth.
I've not read anything by Ms. Ashworth before. This one was part of a 'lucky dip' set of books I got recently because I spent more than £30 with BookPeople. I looked at what they'd sent and thought, "Well, only one of those is of any interest, and I already have a copy of that." Then I decided to at least *try* reading them. So far I've only found one that I just couldn't get into - Have the Men Had Enough? by Margaret Forster. I've read three of the others in three days!
There used to be a conversation along the lines of 'What book have you just read?' or '... just finished reading'. Can anybody post a link, as I unsubsribed from it and now I can't find it?

Picked up a couple of Margaret Atwoods from Oxfam on Friday, and have just started The Handmaid's Tale.
Blimey, it's like Richard and Judy's book club in here! We'll compare notes when I've finished (in about 2009, given my rate of reading )

I gave up on Once in a House on Fire. It's just not my kind of book - somebody's memories of childhood in a poor family in Manchester, with an abusive father.
I've moved on to another of my 'free' books - The Widow Ginger by Pip Granger.
