The beginning of the sentence doesn't agree with the end.

Leo actually brings up an interesting point. Does the smiley go inside or outside the punctuation? [or] punctuation?

Well, sometimes, like , it's part of the sentence.
Then I imagine it should go in.
If it expresses an emotion integral to the sentence, it should go in, (according to my book ).

Oh, and congrats on your quizbowl team.
(Smiley was an external concept, really a second sentence. Hmm... I feel an entry coming on...)

In honor of quizbowl, I have a trivia question - can anyone name an EG entry with a smiley in it? I'll give you a hint, it's got the smiley outside the punctuation.
I can sympathize, MJ. I once set up a League of Obsessive Nitpickers (LOON) and got the biggest response from smarts like this...

Thanks, Leo. We're the league champions - next week we're up for the city championship.
I don't know ... I tend to always put my smileys outside of the punctuation. Like so.
Do tell, Jodan!

Ah, but lets say we collaborated on an entry about smilies and punctuation, thrashed out a whole slew of rules, etc.
They'd have to let another entry through with smilies in it.
Oh so tempting!
