MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship.

Why isn't the existing Flickr account being used for photographs, rather than create a new one?

It can be found here:

That's an account which is/has been used by the artists group isn't it? For illustrating the Guide?

This is not really the same. Well, OK, some of these photos will be used for a purpose (in the Podcast) but mostly it's a photo share/ exhibition. Just for people to look at each others photos and go oooh, clever/where did that 42 come from/ eeeuw (or whatever). I mean, if we could all host pix on our ps or our journals or everybody had their own flickr account I'd be asking for people to post there and just leave us a link.

And so the photos will be set to public so that everybody can see/comment on them. That's more of a closed group isn't it? And you have to sign up andbe accepted and essentially I just want anybody to be able to send in a photo.

Does that make sense? I haven;t quite worked out the flickr side of things yet. I am open to suggestions - it it possible to set the account so anybody can upload a picture without having to go through me/ join a group? That would be favourite!

My question would be about how big or small to make a photo picture and how to make it so.

When I take a picture it is the size my camera decides.
When I crop the edge gubbins off it is then a bit less than the size my camera decided earlier.
I do have a program which can make it 800 * 600 and half it but it is then 400 * 260 or something as decided by this program.

I think I do have a flickr account as do all of us with Yahoo emails but I wouldn't know what to do with it.

I agree Yahoo Group not appropriate vehicle. You can email a picture to flickr... would need careful moderation though if those details were public...! (happy to help) Also worth setting up photo sets within the flickr account for the various projects - not sure if emails can direct straight into a set.

It certainly seemed to work for the h2g2 Photographers, and takes the onus of one person taking ownership of receiving and sorting through photos.

Also, by using the voting system previously used, makes it more Democratic.

MMF the 42 photos are NOT for illustrating the guide.

The Towelcast42 team have asked for 42 themed photos, and Create has happily agreed to host the task to obtain them. It is at the discretion of Towelcast42 which images to use.

The Community Artists have moved from Yahoo to Noesis and are always happy to accept new members, they do use a democratic voting system for images intended to illustrate the guide.

Right, I can see I shall have to have a play with Flickr, but if people could email it direct and esp to a special '42' folder, that would be the ticket. I shall certainly be taking you up on your offer to help manage the Flickr side of things, too Scrumph. Can you email Create? [email protected]

I don't think there are any resizing issues for Flickr BrownFurby - the measurements quoted in MMF's link are for the Guide illustrations. The Towelcast people (Hi mini!) have offered to do any manipulation that's needed for the podcasts later. Or was there another reason you ask?

Right!

I have finally got a flickr group up and working, so now you can either send your photos to the Create email and I will upload them or add them to the group direct if you have a flickr account. Thanks to BrownFurby who provided my test pictures.

Thanks also to BrownFurby for inspiring what I think could be fun - a caption competition! Look at the photos and add an amusing caption.

Anyway, here's the link, to be added to the text above momentarily.

To see the pictures from that flicker link I had to click on "members" and then "h2g2 create".

I did understand the 42 pictures were not for the guide as such but thought that Rules Is Rules and if they needed to be 400 * 300 to be here that was the size they needed to be. I have never known how to get pictures an exact size and it is probably really easy to do once you know, it can't be much more difficult to get 400*300 than 400*297 can it. Perhaps it can. Anyway mine are less than that.

Hi there the photos are here.

And they're rather good, I'll have to try this.

Do we want the no 42, or 42 instances of things?

Thanks for the better link. I think mine was to the group generally.

Oh and BrouwnFurby, you are right, it would be a good habit to get into to submit thingsin Guide ready format. I shall bother People Who Knowabout how to do it and have a think abot how to add such instructions.

Hullo, there!

Bit of a random topic to jump into after a prolonged absence and delayed resurrection on noohootoo, but there seems to be some confusion here about flickr accounts and groups, and I thought I might be able to shed some light. smiley - lighthouse

- a Yahoo! Group, such as http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/h2g2Photographers/ has AFAIK nothing to do with Flickr, except that Yahoo! bought Flickr a few years ago. It's basically a mailing list with a few extra collaboration tools for its "members".

- http://www.flickr.com/photos/73017809@N06/ is a flickr *account*: a login that you can only post to if you know the username and password, or some other secret (such as an authorized API token, or upload e-mail address). That user can divide their photo into "sets", but those sets cannot contain photos from other users.

- http://www.flickr.com/groups/h2g2create/ is a flickr *group*: a page with a forum and a "pool" of photos which can be contributed to by any flickr user (subject to various configuration options). This seems much more suitable for the purpose since anyone with a flickr account can add a photo directly. Anyone without a flickr account can, of course, ask Create to upload and add a photo on their behalf. Note that each group only has one "pool" of photos, so it might be better to create a new Group for each theme, rather than a permanent "h2g2create" one.

Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure there are 42 books on the mantelpiece-cum-shelf directly ahead of me; and watch this space (or, rather, that one) for a rather apt screenshot... smiley - weird

Oh, one more thing about flickr groups - you can make life easier for yourself and more interesting for the rest of us by unticking the option that requires every photo to be approved before showing in the group. You can always remove people's photos afterwards if they're inappropriate. smiley - run

For instance, no one can yet see that I added this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sorbus/6696810009/smiley - biggrin

Welcome back and glad this has cought your attention! That is an excellent summery of the situation, thanks! And useful advice about the unchecking box thing. I do seem to have some hazy memory of leaving it checked on purpose, but you are right, of course. Easy to remove if there's a problem. Right, hang on...
