No skins are going.

I can't imagine our friendly Editors we all know and wanting to do anything as unpopular as getting rid of skins.
Front Page update - yes, it's sad but understandable I suppose. Deleting skins entirely, though - that would be unthinkable.

Anyway - Pastey has repeatedly said that as long as he lives, Goo is safe. So the important skin's going to be fine.

That's a bit like saying that far more people shop when the stores are open than when they aren't. The Pliny front page is the only one I have access to when I come to this site. In order to get to my Alabaster Personal Space, I have to click on Preferences and then on Update. Once I've arrived at my space, I rarely need to access the front page in alabaster.

So going forward, my only shot at seeing any updated info will come when I first go to http://h2g2.com

It might be worth pointing out that there is a difference between Ripley and the skins. Ripley is the car engine, and the skins are the paint job. I think the idea is tht, whatever engine is under the bonnet, we'll still be able to paint it in whichever skin we like.

Ripley might on,y be running on its last legs, but she still looks Gooey.

Hi Geggs, it may be as early as next week, but not before the Editorial staff tidies up a few loose ends.

Indeed.
Recently I found that lists of 'my conversations' in Pliny
have a 'most recent post' link that at least takes me to my
own most recent post. This is somewhat more convenient
than the 'first or last' postings option one gets in the general
conversation lists at A-page forums such as ASK. The feature
is of course only useful if one has recently posted but useless
when one is merely lurking.

Yes, FIRST UNREAD post is a 'must have' option if Pliny is to
ever become popular with the Elders.

I agree with you and could not be more impressed with the dedication and skills of our new Deputy Guide Editors.

As to the other, yes, it is sort of sad, while also being absolutely amazing. Ripley is very old, built for a bygone Internet era, yet it still limps along as long as it has Pliny to support it.

I just discovered that URLs with an S after the http
will actually work in Pliny. The old skins in Ripley
were never built to recognise the new https standards.

In several threads where people have complained that
posted links are not working I've gone on about how the
new URLs with S have to be copied and pasted into the
address bar because they aren't active links when pasted
into convos. Obviously this is now not true in Pliny.

Another positive plus for the new system.

So, is Pliny fully operational now for all the end-to-end content creation and editorial functions? Retiring the Ripley Front Page would seem to imply it is.

Only the Ripley Front Page, which is visible in all legacy Ripley skins (classic goo, plain, alabaster, brunel), is retiring but no Ripley skin or editorial function is being retired at this time.
