I take it there will be a "REPORT" button on advertising.

I guess it can't be avoided, in the long run - but I hope there'll be an ad-free alternative for paying members?

I disaprove of AdBlock on principle. Ads are there for a good reason. Usually. But I do, for security reasons, use NoScript and RequestPolicy. These tend to have much the same effect. I might put in exceptions for hootoo, though, just because I like you so much.

I use AdBlock plus, but I disable it for sites that I like and aren't obnoxious with their ads. (Seriously MSNBC, STOP with the popups every time I navigate to and from your main page. smiley - cross) I would absolutely disable it for the h2g2.com domain.

Hi you were the first one to welcome me back - and then I decided to exit again - but this website is a really wonderful friend and so I have returned. Could it be due to Pliny?

I am so pleased if it is. However I am told once again, not to write on this thread.

There are a lot of well wushers on this thread. Do they all receive the message which I received about my reply??

I waited for my reply to be posted for fifteen minutes. The person I was posting has many disguises and has done an enormous amount of writing for this wegsite. I have enjoyed it all. .

If this happens again I shall begine to realise that this website does not accept octagenarians. Especially those who admit to being one..!!

Also Ran, you are welcome to post on this thread smiley - hug. There should be no message telling you not to post : if you are receiving a message it is a problem with the software, not with you.

Can you help us get to the bottom of it by telling me exactly what message you receive?

Sometimes things are running slowly in the morning, perhaps it is that.

AlsoRan,

"This forum is not a public announcements forum. It is reserved for important news about h2g2.

Please don't start new threads here, as we anticipate lots of subscriptions to this page."

The above would be the message. It just asks you not to start *new* threads, it's still OK to reply to existing threads.

The system is having a hard time, and the tech team (of one person, basically...) is working very hard to help us move to Pliny, which will use less load on the servers.

And do keep in touch, you are indeed an appreciated member of the site, and your posts always make me happy.

Perhaps you would be interested in giving your thoughts about the new system? Please let me know if you would, there might be things that we could improve. I can give you information on it.

Kind regards
Milla

Well, I could change that message a bit, or a lot. Christiane, hi it's me Happy Nerd, and I've volunteering as h2g2 Communications. So it is me that posts here. And I'm quite happy for you to talk to me or anyone else about the news I post.

So, I wasn't able to connect for most of the day yesterday. Was it just me or did the servers blow a hampster? I kept getting server error pages that mentioned that "the disk is full".

One of Auntie's timebombs, it seems.

There's a short thread about it here: F22114275?thread=8292856

I wouldn't blame it on Auntie, though... let's see if we get a better explanation in time.

It was one of Aunty's timebombs smiley - winkeye

Sort of. Although more like something in the woodpile.

From what I can gather, Aunty has a script that clears out older logs, or ones that take up too much space. Our servers don't have this, and it's not something we anticipated needing just yet. And we believe Aunty genuinely didn't think to warn us. Still, our logs grew silently to such a point where they'd used up all the disk space, and we've got a lot of it. But they've been silently growing since we set up on our own.
Last night, we ran out of disk space just as the cache clearing was running it seems. So, the cache was cleared, but before new versions could be written the logs filled the space throwing an error, which got logged, or not because their was no space, which threw an error, etc, etc.
This then seemed to leave us with a corrupted version of the cache, which once we'd deleted all the old logs, we then had to clear the cache and rebuild the site. Which takes quite a while.
That's not a definitive answer, but it's what it seems to be.

You'll no doubt be pleased to know that Pliny stayed up all through it smiley - smiley
