Gnomon - time to move on

Where are they? I may be just looking in the wrong place.

You can't see the photo album, or you get a different ad, Gnomon?

Gnomon - time to move on

I can't see the photo album, because my company doesn't allow me to look at it.

I don't see any ads in Pliny, and that may also due to a Firewall restriction, but I don't even know where the ads should be, as no one has yet told me.

Looking at this conversation, there is a banner ad across the bottom of the page. While I'm composing this post, there is a similar ad across the bottom of the page (although I must scroll down to see it, it isn't in a permanent frame, thank goodness). Lookin at the front page, there is a large square ad-space at the top right.

Thanks, Zube. I see a long narrow empty box at the bottom of every conversation, and a square empty box in the top right of the front page.

I've disabled ABP, but I don't see the ads yet. But that happens on other sites that I've disabled ABP for as well. It could also be firefox blocking them or possibly the firewall I'm behind.

I'll check when I get home on chrome and firefox as well.

Secretly Not Here Any More

She's a bit of alright. I keep getting ebay ads. I'll swap that for a feisty Teuton any day of the week.

Happy Nerd,

I'm sorry I read that wrong, I thought while Pliney had the ability to support advrtising and sponcership for some reason I hadn't twigged that they were going to be 'launched' at the same time

hence my surprise

I am bit disconcerted on this, I think that along we knew that we were going to have advertising to pay for our upkeep but have been reassured with words like ' 'discrete' and 'unobtrusive' and 'in keeping with h2g2'

which they are not

That market is dominated by Russians, so chances are that lady wasn't Teuton. smiley - winkeye

I am sorry you dislike the adverts Peanut.

I have to say I am very very pleased with them, I am pleased with them because they ensure the survival of h2g2 into the future. The community consortium spent a great deal of time examining the business aspects of running h2g2, and I can say that this is the best of all possible options. When h2g2 was founded in 1999 it carried advertising, sadly it didn't manage to sell enough advertising to stay in business, and so it was rescued by the BBC, who were kind enough to fund it with the license fee. However when that ended we had to find another option, and so we are here now. A lot has changed in the online advertising business, and fortunately we now have the right sort of advertising to have a future.

I believe they are the best compromise available between being so unobtrusive that no one notices them, and therefore potential advertisers will not pay a great deal, and being so obtrusive they put people off. They are only to to the right of edited entries and at the bottom of forums. I, along with 99% of the sites users, tend to start reading at the left of an entry, and the top of a forum.

If we could not earn any money we could not take the site forward into the future, update the technical aspects and pay for our server space and so on. There is only so long we can go on relying on goodwill of volunteers, and the kindness of Noesis.

If it's cars, mobile phones and games I can live with it. The bottom banners are only visible if you search for them anyway, and the ones next to edited entries don't look very obtrusive to me. smiley - smiley

Exactly. I believe the advert you noticed was removed shortly after we drew Brian's attention to it.

Compared to other sites they are very small and I really almost didn't notice the one on the FP at the right.

I tend to notice flashy, moving ads. But I can just go and read and write in brunel and ignore the ads. smiley - winkeye

I think the ads look good. smiley - smiley

I would also like to point out that I've already looked one of them up, and found it to be admirable. It was an ad here in the US for a mobile phone company that can provide phones to low-income people, often with a subsidy. smiley - smiley

So a vote of confidence here. smiley - winkeye
