MMF - Keeper of Mustelids, with added P.M.A., is now in a relationship.

So is this Pliny the Elder, with Pliny the Younger to follow?

And really looking forward to Aristotle.

Cheers MMF.
I'm glad to see someone else wants to know
the answer to that penultimate question.

The lack of response to my post #3 was starting
to wear heavily upon me. Had I struck a nerve?
Is there a big secret? Am I just being ignored?
Is no one else interested.

So thanks for sharing the question.
It does seem pertinent. And for the record
I was not being impertinent in Post#3.
smiley - cheers

You are welcome.

And now I feel we are on spacecraft B.

The only Eddie I know is Eddie the Eagle, and that is Fail!

Whoever is coming up with these names is not doing well.

We've had 'Alien' resurected, Pliny the obscure and now Eddie?

Whose in charge of the Heart of Gold?

Or have we gone from a Vogon Hyperway oi Starship Titanic?

kea ~ Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded but very well read blue and white website

I loved the look of barlesque, so once the functionality of pliny is fixed I would probably shift there from alabaster (beloved for 8 years).

Re the ads. I've had a look today and what I see right now is not obtrusive compared to the pic of the ad Bel posted yesterday. Actually, it's an ad for a post-grad fair at the Auckland uni and it's colour and style blend in with the rest of the page smiley - winkeye

Also I am relieved to see that the bottom banner is able to be blocked by Flashblock in Firefox. However, I've just refreshed the FP, and the top right ad is a flashing ad for a flat belly secret*. Some of the volunteers had a discussion pre-move at noesis about how flashing ads are a deterrent for people, esp those with disabilities that make concentrating on pages with flashing things very hard. Should I make that case again here? Is there anyway that h2g2 can have non-flashing ads, or at least have ones that Flashblock can block?

This is a disability access issue. Was this considered?

Oh, I see the bottom banner is flashing too smiley - erm I guess that one is easier to ignore.

*African Mango Plus, if someone wants to get that one pulled.

Hi All,

It's Pliny the scientist rather than statesman, so that's elder? I think it was covered in the Post last week.

Eddie's actually an anacronym for something that we started the redevelopment around, but is some way off yet. So Pliny will continue to be developed and improved. You never know we might even fix Who's Online smiley - biggrin

As kea brought it up I'd like to know:

Do alabaster users find Pliny a good alternative style wise?
(not talking about functionality here, just the color/picture design)

Personally, I find it cool and calm, even calmer to the eye than Alabaster.

But I still think most of the text is a bit on the large side, and the space on the page isn't very well utilised - lots of air, un-used areas. Maybe I can just zoom out, and see how that feels...
Also, I find the fixed page width a little odd... When in full screen, there is a lot of blank space at the sides, when in a smaller window, the active area does not contract. Fixed margins might be spiffier than fixed active area?

Are you volunteering to log design requests? smiley - evilgrin

Secretly Not Here Any More

"Re the ads. I've had a look today and what I see right now is not obtrusive compared to the pic of the ad Bel posted yesterday. Actually, it's an ad for a post-grad fair at the Auckland uni"

Given that AdSense uses your search history to determine what adverts so show (it knows you're in Auckland for example), Bel might want to have a quick word with her sons...

Um... do you think this would be a good idea?
smiley - erm
I'm afraid to end up with 200 different wishes, although I'd really like to give people a possibility to have a say in the issue, but I can't make custom skins for everyone.

Gnomon - time to move on

If you're going to put < thingies around text, put spaces around them < like this > . Otherwise Pliny will think you're trying to type a smiley code, won't recognise it as a valid code and will just hide it.

A known bug.

(And I'm a bit happier viewing Pliny at 90% size...)

Tav, I didn't mean to make new skins for everyone.... but I find that having a list allows you to remember some good ideas, and prioritise, and reject and fiddle and do other interesting things before you set out to create....

Prof, my comment about the < and > symbols only applied to conversations.

Tweaking your personal space so that it looks good in Pliny is a much bigger task, which I'm willing to work through with you if you want, but not here in this thread. Contact me if you want help in this.

Gnomon, my thanks my friend for your information and appreciation for your offer. But for the time being, I'll leave things as they are. You back room guys have loads on your plate at the moment and my true appreciation for your work can't really be put eloquently smiley - smiley

Prof, I also wait with redoing my PS until Pliny is fixed. It doesn't seem to make much sense to do it right now. smiley - smiley

Yes Milla , that may be a good idea. Should I jsut start a thread on ask about it? Or what would you suggest? And when would be the right time?
