"Your name is Jed" doesn't come up on Wikiquotes.
I do know the novel that starts "Call me Ishmael" though.
I don't know what an Orthicon Tube is, either. I know that TVs used to have Cathode ray tubes but I don't know much about those. Though I have heard that, in certain circumstances they could implode.
So, having proved the extent of my technical ignorance,I'll try to go back and sort my story out.

chomp chomp cake nice cake and tea
with Lil and everyone. And checking fractals, and thinking about stories and everything. Nice. Now I feel secure. I think I need a Guardian Angel to make me feel secure, at all times. hmm.
.. Cynthia! maybe Cynthia is a guardian angel. She would say Call me Mom, kid, or Ishmael. That's such a great opening line, call me Ishmael.
Hmm. Who is Jed, then?
Imagine, right, if we decided to live in the stories we write, and then we write four alternative versions, and live in all four versions, all at the same time. Like parallel worlds.Actually, maybe not. Could get weird. Or maybe not. I think it might be good. I don't know. I hope, mvp, that this story will appear somewhere, even though it might be for your writing course, because I really need to know which direction your heroine took. I really need to know.

hah! OK, this posting is borderline conversation/writing workshop, and feel free to avoid at all times.
Hah! Notes! That's it! Always back to Notes. The answer to my problem. Why do I always forget Notes. From now on, I shall become Mrs. Notes, who writes Notes. It is Mrs. Notes who guides my hand. Notes can take the rough and tumble. They can put themselves out there and it doesn't matter if someone tells them that they are not very good really , because Notes get under pressure sometimes if they think they have to become a very good Writer, and writing Guide Entries makes them go so nervous they shake all night, (although they are working on that one)
, so it suits them to be not very good really, and leaves them free to somersault through the daisies. Notes just want to write, and they can adapt. They will just become Not Very Good Notes, and recycle themselves and become an alternative ending.
However, the difference between Notes and Internal Pressure to be a very good Writer, is that Notes like being around, even though they are incredibly annoying, and they won't go all sensitive and peculiar and have to leave hootoo because they have spooked themselves.
.
And somewhere between the splurge and the dirge, I write twenty seven rhyming verses in a language known only to a civilisation that lurks in pavement cracks, and it is a new day in space, all that space, so much space, and even the haunted wanderer with the translucent eyes, who stares at himself in mirrors, whispering , is happy in space today.
And somewhere between the reason and the risk, I see a flock of white birds flying across the sunset and I walk out into a new world of unusual textures, and try to paint the energy lines of a helicopter whirr, and then I break down crying because of injustice and wounded hearts.
And the the story is everywhere, and the road rolls on, forever on, through the scent of white lilac and ......

I agree with you about Notes. They can say anything they like and it doesn't matter, because you don't show them to anyone. They are a secret between you and the page.
But somewhere between the Note and the finished product is a quagmire in which words and paragraphs, character sketches and even story lines can get lost. Perhaps you have to be determined to wade in there, rescue the pieces that are still floating, wash them down and re-use them.
So, when I write, I'm a scavenger, using flotsam and jetsam to build my story. Which doubtless means it's a cobbled-up old thing.

cactuscafe Posted Jul 28, 2011
Hah! Now I get it. That is so beautifully written, mvp. I love that quagmire.
You know, I think you just described the craft of writing there. I wonder, can other writers relate to that quagmire?
And that is so weird what you said about the flotsam and jetsam. We've been on the beach these last few days, all retired and relaxed, and we were discussing transient art, you know, like sand castles, and sand mandalas. We love to walk along the shore in the evening, scavenging, picking up stones and feathers and old rope and plastic bottle tops, and maybe create a sculpture or a mini stonehenge, and then wash the tide wash it all away.
I don't think I am destined for that quagmire, for that vocational craft of writing. I don't feel the pull. hmm. Maybe this is quite interesting. I think its quite interesting. . I think I am a scavenger, a forever Note maker. I think Notes are my finished product. I think I feel very happy about that, and I might just have to go and dance into the sunset, wearing a crown of cormorant feathers, juggling sixpences and sentences, and eating ice cream at the same time.
Actually, you know, I am being serious, I do so appreciate the insights and sharing that we do here, because it creates new insights and highlights and deep thoughts and realisations.
Here we can sculpt vocations.
Ooh, that's good. Sculpt vocations. Well, maybe its not that good..
hmm. And somewhere between the steps with the zig zag shadows, and the bus stop, I took seven photos of a seagull, and threw a thousand fragments of poetry into the sky, and watched them flutter to the ground, to form new patterns.
Oh, that is just so Greek Islands hippie circa 1970 something. .
Have to go. Deep thoughts. Happy thoughts. Thankyou.
I will return.

All the vocations I have ever sculpted have been sand castles. I, er, retrain a lot.
But I think there's room for all different kinds of writing. The kind of in-the-moment inspiration you've mentioned is really useful. Not just for the momentary joy of it (and that is truly valuable), but for the gift it gives to others.
Somebody else will catch a glimpse of that, and run with it. Perhaps in a surprising direction.

Ah yes. (deep thoughts over first sip of morning coffee). .
Ah yes yes yes. (sips coffee). .
Hmm. Ah yes.
I really honour craftsmanship, be it the craft of writing, or any of the arts, or the craftmanship of creating a table, or a coffee cup or anything. And I also honour the journey of the craftsperson, from the apprentice to the skilled elder.
We have a friend who is a jeweller, and I am always amazed at how she can make beautiful creations from all the raw materials in her workshop.
Awesome in fact. And there are many skilled craftspeople on this website for sure!
If I had to craft a finished product I would need teamwork, for sure. heheh. Even for writing a story, these days. . This is what I've realised in the last day or so. Help! I need a writer. I have the fragments, you have the glue, the skills to unite them. heheh.
I like that. And I feel very happy because I am not going to put myself under pressure any more, and I might even start to enjoy myself. Is there going to be a Beach Cafe in the noohootoo? maybe with a couple of hammocks, so I can sleep and dream and write Notes along my arm,
or mutter intense fragmented poetry
and then someone would tip me out of the hammock. Well, I would anyway. .
I suppose fragments, and the spaces in between fragements, always were my true expression. Probably because I am a totally broken person, in fact, which could be a negative thing, but actually I think it just might be OK after all, and ah yes yes yes and I will stand on the bridge in the riverlight haze and think about Krishna and cake and friends and the sonic energy of the butterfly! yes! ah yes .. and ...

A Beach Cafe in the noohootoo, complete with hammocks and cooling drinks ? Sounds good.
Teamwork to produce finished articles sounds good too. I might be able to manage words, but these audio-visual thingies are quite beyond me.

(swinging gently in the virtual breeze, in one of the h2g2 hammocks)
Ooh, yes please! A cooling drink. Nice.
What??? I have to go mix it myself. wah.
Oh, I am the Beach Cafe barperson? Can I work shifts? I need time to travel through the void between the mallard duck and the river it is swimming in.
OK, I can mix a cocktail, that I can do. Do redwine and oj mix? Erm. Well, I can learn.
.
Its funny innit, when you get somewhere, you can't remember a time when you hadn't got somewhere, until you do forget and find that you are nowhere again, so then you have to get back to somewhere.
Like, how did I ever exist without teamwork? Now I am really happy.
And the other thing is, now I am not putting myself under pressure to create a finished product, I can really really enjoy reading and appreciating other peoples'. And there is so much amazing work on this website to appreciate.
Help! Help! The whispers! The whispers! What came next? Perhaps it was the miracle of smiles, or perhaps it was the map that will take me to that town that I can never find anywhere, even though I have searched all the towns on Earth .. and
Do you need a doctor my dear? says a passer by. No! I need a writer! , or a painter or a singer or someone who can complete the picture.
And ...
