The vexed issue of Smoking
random fat bird Posted Oct 24, 2002
As with most non-smokers, I prefer not to be in a smoky environment, but respect the rights of people to smoke if the venue permits. Splitting up rooms works only if there are windows or air conditioning and it may be worth a try, but it may well impede the free flowing conversation/insults and general insanity of the pub quiz.
You say that the room we are to use is a downstairs one? Please, please, please say that the air conditioning is good, not just because of the smell, but because I am quite a bad asthmatic and may turn blue occasionally *grin* f not, one shall hae to carry one's nebuliser and get on with it, for one meet every six months I can cope

In an ideal world I'd love to have a non-smoking meet, but I understand that this isn't possible because many attendees smoke. A smoking section near a powerful extractor fan would be fine, although the issue is raised of if there's a powerful extractor fan in the venue or not.

No, but there's a bloke who use to quite like Land Rovers. He's pretty strong, will that do?

I'm very supprised at how polite everyone is being about this (after reading all the posts).
I agree with a lot of the comments: Smokers (myself included) feel uncomfetable, flustered when we can't smoke. And some non-smokers feel very uncomfetable being in a environment where people are smoking. And some non-smokers don't appear to mind too much either way. So I'm glad this hasn't just gone to the "we want non-smoking" versus "we want all smokign" arguement from teh two extremes.
I guess it will depend a lot on the venue; if Its a single room we have then the "smokers corner" might not work too well, depending on how large the venue is, but if there is a handy door to the outside world then I'd be resanobly happy with poppping outside for a ciggerette if this was the best option, as we don't really want to preven either the smokers or the non smokers from coming if it looks like duel room/split room synaryo won't work in teh constraints of the venue that has been chosen.

I think all the smokers should be stripped naked and sent outside.... Did someone say the meet up is in January....?
On a serious note, I would prefer non-smoking, but will tollerate segregated smoking, as long as it in no way interferes with the food.

I don't smoke, but I quite like to have a smoking section to hang around in. Adds atmosphere

Seedy? SEEDY? what are you implying?
Don;t you know us smokers all sit round in french cafes discussing descartes and generally being suave and sophisticated (admittedly slightly spoilt by trying to cough half a lung up, but some people will always see the down side).

Ahh. I cleary belong to the wrong class of smoker. The class that sits in smokey bars listening to bad rock music playing pool and poker. The smokers that is, not the bad rock music . I'll just shut up now.

Whilst us more balanced smokers do both, though the smoky corner of the bar, bad rock music and annoying people in the bar, with noise such as "Oo, these young people I don't know"
*tug on beard, puff of pipe
"not in my day it wasn't"
*tut coff puff on cigar
"beers good tonight
*tug on beard coff puff on pipe
"yes"
*long puff on pipe extend beard rubbing moment
"I though so too"
*slight frown, slight raise of eyebrow puff on pipe
"oo ahh"

Couldn't agree more Bassman, the odour is dire.... I can't even stand the smell of pipe and cigar smoke
When I left home I realised that there was such a thing as clean air, and to give credit to my parents, whenever I'm at their house now they smoke in the garden or near the door... May have something to do with the fact I'm carrying their first grandchild though
Heigh ho... Looks as though they still haven't given us any info on the venue though. How vexing

Abd and I are making the ultimate sacrifice and will be having lunch in the venue to see how smoky it gets. And we could tell you, but we're enjoying teasing people.

I meant on the air conditioning element Mina, but as usual am rambling *grin*
I know you enjoy not letting us know until closer to the time, trust me I don't mind, as long as there is a chair for me when I get there I couldn't give a flying one where the venue is
Might have to work on the concept of getting bars to sell milk though, I go through an inordinate amount you know... Methinks the bump is starting early on that score
