The vexed issue of Smoking

Ohh, that's a good idea- where's that cherry tobacco? Oh, actually that's got me thrown out pubs before- apparently it smells of something else one might smoke in an extra long roll up

By my reckoning, 16% of attendees are smokers. Allowing for the fact that smoke will occupy more space than smokers, I reckon around 20-25% of available pub space would make a fair smoking area.

I thought that we'd agreed half a chair and a broken stool?
Unforunately the ideal spot in the pub to make smoking is their non-smoking bit. We'll probably make one end of the room the smoking bit and ask that people mill in and out a bit.

'Mill in and out a bit'? What's that supposed to achieve? Primitive air conditioning? Or are you implying that the 'end' will be so small there won't be room for all us chimmeys to stand still in it?

Sorry, I should have been clearer, I was hoping that you'd all want to mingle, and not just sit at one end of the room. I'd quite like to talk to some of the people who smoke, and I can't stand in a smokey area. I'm sure other Researchers are the same.
And we can't use the non-smoking area for non-smokers because it's not big enough (by your percentages we'd have 80-odd people crammed into it a small space), and we'd all have to walk through the smoke to get to the bar, which can be a bit unpleasant for those who don't like smoke.

Great. It's really difficult to tell people that I don't like smoke when I like people who do smoke!

I can't help thinking that with only a single room to share, and however considerate the smokers are, we will get moaned at yet again

Yep. Ahh well. I'm thick skinned. I'm afraid the moaning is inevitable.
It would be good if it was clear *where* we're supposed to smoke this year though- it was only *after* the July meet I found out there was even supposed to be a seperate smoking area...

The previous meet in January did come with good intentions, as the upper room in the pub was supposed to be the smoking section. Only trouble was it took a couple of hours to get the staff into the pub to open it.

I think that it's going to be the end with the mirrored wall, this will mean that no-one will have to walk through the area to get anywhere else. We'll make sure that we wave smokers around this time.

Yeah, but make sure you *say* that on the day- not all smokers will be reading this thread- some sort of quickly knocked-up 'pollution zone' signs wouldn't go amiss...
