Hi ScienceGirl.
Funnily enough, grits came up in a conersation just the other day, and Shea gave a rather good description [see F43348?thread=151305&skip=1498&show=1]: perhaps you could include some of her more technial details along with the overview you've got at the moment?
The main problem I see with your entry at the moment is that it's a little *too* personal. A bit personal isn't a bad thing, but it ought to be usable as a reference as well. Other readers may disagree with this impression, however.
The only specific case I can spot where people may not know what you mean is "canisters like oats come in". Quite possibly this is something every American would instantly recognise, but personally I can't picture what such a canister would be.
In short, I think you need to go into a bit more detail on this one, but that's just my opinion.

Smij - Formerly Jimster Posted May 31, 2002
I'm surprised someone hasn't 'yikes'ed your second footnote. It's a good entry, but I'm afraid I found this one small reference a bit unnecessary.
*Officially*.
Unofficially, I dribbled coffee out of my nose from laughing.

'What are grits?'
'Grits are 50.'
This joke copyright 'My Cousin Vinny'
I like this but think it may need some more stuff, as suggested above.

There are also some typos that need fixing.
'usially' > usually
'mircowaved' > microwaved
'purchaced' > purchased
(also later 'purchace' > purchase)
(no > (No
I have no idea what you mean by the final paragraph.
'Also, if you are in the Southern United States, you can purchace one of God's greatest mistakes at the Cracker Barrel (see one of my other entries) in large and small quanties, all hours of the day.'
Give me a clue!
I had no idea what grits were - I had always assumed that they were little cakes or biscuits. Now it seems it's more like porridge.

now where's that footnote #2 gone? I'd like to spill some coffee too, you know?

Hi,
Nice entry. I too want to spill coffe out my nose...
Suggestion: Delete that last paragraph, get them mipselled words and it'll be good to go IMO.

I'm sorry to be a party pooper.
I thought the entry, while clever and on a good usbject for the Guide, lacked a number of basic facts and was laced with opinion.
I serious re-write is in order I believe. Also the author hasn't responded to calls for changes in 2 months.
Sorry,
Friar
ps. I DO think this has portential, as the subject is worthy and the writer is clever, but it needs a preety significant overhaul.

portential is an old and strange word which is very similar to:
P O T E N T I A L
excuse the many thumbed friar

I'm afraid that the author hasn't posted to this site since June 6th - a move to the FM perhaps?

I caught the author on AOL Instant Messaging the other day. She, being a full-time student, hasn't had much h2g2 time lately, so while this entry (and another) isn't abandoned, as such, it's on a sort on indefinite hold. Just thought I'd say so here.

Pimms Posted Apr 25, 2003
If no-one is going to pick this up from the FM I may have to do it myself (and I've never eaten Grits) - if I do I'd like some helpful comments from those better informed.
What was that footnote 2?
