*currently in a state in which a thesis paper has dominated his life, Yossarian wonders as he passes the garden which of the options he faces will benefit him greater in the end. He could either take some time off sometime and escape the deprave clutches of this paper that has effectively eaten away at the remainder of his childhood innocence, attend the party, and simply enjoy himself in the company of friends he hasn't talked to in months, or he could continue revising the thesis resulting in his going somewhat insane (as can already be seen) and perhaps even stripping off all of his clothes and diving into his neighbors' pool (as he has done in such circumstances in the past)*
