In second grade, we all sat in different color groups. If you were naughty, you had to sit in the Yellow Group, and weren't allowed to participate in class. We had a railroad that ran along the schoolyard, and for the first time in my life, I heard the train whistle. I enthusiastically whistled along, but Mrs. Bowler wasn't happy with it. Nowadays we could sue the school for stifling my creativity! smiley - winkeye

Freight train, Freight train, going so fast.
Freight train, Freight train, going so fast.
Please don't tell what train I'm on,
So they won't know where I've gone.

smiley - whistle

My great-grandfather and his brother were
hobos who rode trains all over the USA.
They probably saw all kinds of amazing things.
Then they settled down and raised families.

These days on the train, about all you can see is the trees planted along the tracks to cut down on the noise level.

These days it's getting harder to find
a train that hasn't been cut back by
government bureacrats. smiley - wah

Except maybe the frontier train at Hershey
Park. smiley - tongueout

Good article Jimi - I knew there were a couple more short line railroads around here, but wasn't sure where.

There was one mentioned in the Lancaster newspaper a few weeks ago, but I can't remember where it was.

That article mentioned a bridge that was
destroyed by Tropical storm Agnes in 1972.
Agnes flooded my uncle's house in Forty-Fort
(near Wilkes-Barre) to a depth of four or
five feet. It washed many graves downstream
(I have a friend whose brother died young,
and whose remains were carried away by the
flooding river). My uncle figured that the
damage to his house would be too great to
repair (Besides, he was a renter; the place
belonged to his sister-in-law who lived next door),
so he simply packed what he could salvage
and moved back to Massachusetts where he
was born. He was 84 at the time.

I lived in Steelton, just south of Harrisburg along the river, during Agnes. The whole downtown wa ruined.

My parents had kept my birth certificate in the safe deposit box and when the floodwaters came, the vault filled with water.

Now my birth certificate is of the same texture and colour as the Declaration of Independence. smiley - tongueout
