have the comitee won the bid??
how many other bids were entered??
do you know who the bidders are??
how much are the Beeb asking for??
when will we get to know??
<<
I think some of those questions will be answerable after the event, and some will never be answered.. It's unlikely that we will get to know who all the bidders were. Or how much the BBC were asking.

What is the full potential of hootoo? Please explain.
Well... I can say at the moment we certainly did all we could. There is not more than that.

the "ha,ha" murdoch senario i posted erlier!
a huge cash injection and the site becoming a rival (and one stop shop) for wikipedia and facebook??

I don't see that as the full potential of h2 at all. I'd see the full potential to be something more like:
A vibrant writers' community, publishing a wide range of high quality entries on all sorts of stuff, creating the HHGG. We'd have high reader stats as well as high active user stats, but high in relationship to the quality of the site rather than just big numbers.
A vibrant internet community that underpins that, producing a range of community activities and locations eg The Post, SEx, excellent debate threads, excellent silly threads, a high degree of internet maturity, journals, networking, focal points for special interest groups. We would attract newbies and retain them and grow in a sustainable way that keeps the integrity and flavour of h2g2 (rather than becoming big for the sake of it, or big fast for the sake of it).

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am... Posted Jun 3, 2011
For the site to become a rival of Wonkipedia and Facebook it would have to become properly comparable to Wonkipedia and Facebook... and then it won't be h2g2 any more.

they both can be said to have roots in hootoo??
would it be, "destroying the village, to save the village"

What do you mean Taff? Do you mean would those things still exist if we became busier? Why not?
Thursday, 17 February 2011: H2G2 Sale - The next step
There is no way that h2g2 will ever become a wikipedia or FB and still be h2g2. We're primarily a writers' community which those two things are not, and there are far less people on the planet capable of good writing than there are people who want to network socially or write dry fact based articles that anyone else can alter at any time.
The only way that h2g2 would ever become like those two is if, as Mr D says, the site became something else entirely. Can't see it myself. The community will determine how successful the site becomes, not just the new owners.

Also, why would Murdoch or whoever, want to buy this site?

From the way bids normally work, you will never be told who else bid, if anybody, or how much they offered. If the h2g2 consortium win the bid, then it will be announced, and I presume that we can then be told how much the consortium offered/paid, if anything, for the bid.
I think that Barlesque still has a number of bugs, but I think that the number of serious ones is less than 10. It also lacks a number of features which we really need, but I'd say that number is less than 5. So if we are given the Barlesque code, I'd say we should be able to fix it and make it work. I do think that route would be better than trying to support Goo, Brunel and Alabaster into the future. (I used to be a developer myself, so I have a small idea what's involved).
The problems with Barlesque are due to the developers not asking the users what they wanted and needed.

Of course, what the do I know? I was the only person who was suprised that the BBC decided to sell the place

That's hopeful. Do we have a list anywhere of the 10 and 5 (approx)?
I haven't seen much improvement in the functionality myself, but don't spend much time there.
