Thank you, Pastey.
I'd not picked that up amid all the hooha (stopped watching most of the threads - couldn't keep up).
in particular:
>>
2) What we see as Barlesque is actually a version of h2g2 that's been built in Forge with the Barlesque styling.
<<
Interesting.

I'm asking this as a technically orientated question rather than one aimed at the IC, but you still might not be able to answer it:
Is DNA worth something to sell in and of itself i.e. would the worth of h2g2 be largely to do with DNA?
I appreciate your posts Pastey, and those of the other ICers. This kind of discussion, where there is some attempt to engage the community is exactly what we need (and what the bbc was largely bad at).

so if hootoo does not go with forge when sold does that mean it will need to be rebuilt all over again???

So if, say, the decision was made, or if it is necessary for other reasons, to remove the barlesque skin and any Forge elements that go with it and so to revert to the existing skins that we had at the start of the year, how easy or hard would that be do to?

If the community bid is successful, then there will obviously be a period of transition where things are moved around. One thing you can hopefully now see though is that there's at least one developer involved in the bid who can fix the burlesque bugs. First up would have to be clearing those apostrophe encodings out of the database

>>so if berklessk isn't fixed by sale day, it'll still be a clunky monstrocity when we are under new ownership???
Yes, but we don't have to use it if we don't want to (and we don't want to as far as I can tell).

is DNA worth something on its own? to someone probably. I'm afraid I don't know enough about it, sorry.

Sorry if I missed this, but isn't the apostrophe problem with the DNA skins? Unless we get to keep DNA there won't be an apostrophe problem will there?
(and while I'm here, can whoever is doing the h2g2c2 blog, please stop posting links to barlesque? I'm making my way through all the documents and the threads in particular I have to translate back into alabaster. Very tedious).

Another question for the IC. Initially the idea for the consortium was to support any good (in community terms) bids from outside, and to put in our own bid if there weren't any viable external ones. Is that still true, or are we keen now to run the site ourselves irrespective?

Pastey Posted Jun 3, 2011
As far as I'm aware, the old skins have not been moved into Forge, and will therefore still be running independently on the DNA platform, which would mean that to remove h2g2 from Forge would simply be a case of deleting all those files.
Would we have to go through this again? we wouldn't have to do anything, but h2g2 has technically stagnated over the years, and the Zend framework gives it a very good chance of getting back to cutting edge.

Kea, the BBC asked us specifically only to post links to Barlesque, that's why it was done. Although I think they meant rather on faceboook and twitter.

I agree there are some good features bob (personally I like the FP alot more). Problem is that we would lose so much functionality. I think that would be pretty bad for the community. It wasn't just the bugs that were a problem.

the apostrophe problem is because of the way Barlesque enters data into the database. it cleans it when it brings it out again, but that cleaning process hasn't been added to the old skins, and needs to be.

*still giggling over post 619*
You may not be able to answer this (though now that I think about it, it's speculation, not sales-related stuff, so maybe...) but, if we win the bid, will there be actual community testing of changes? Like way back when, when dna and then Brunel were developed, and I annoyed Mark Moxon by constantly asking if 2legs would be able to still access, before I got it through my head that the older skins would still be accessible once everything went live? The testing was on a separate site, so h2g2 plugged along as usual while we tried to break things--and we got them to change the really nasty green that Brunel originally had (yes, it was bad--it was a green rather reminiscent of meconium transitioning to breastfed baby poo (yes, original Brunel color was what I thought of when PaperKid was at that stage
))
