Baron Grim Posted Jun 4, 2011
The who's on line and the eyes are the same issue. What is happening is that if a user's space is accessed it sets the flag to indicate they're on line, even if they're not. If you go check someone's Uspace you'll see them show up a few minutes later on the list. Sometimes you'll see a whole bunch of users on line (in the thousands). My guess is that either there's some server activity like archiving happening or a search engine web crawler is hitting the site.

Depsite all that happened I would, if only for comedy value, love to see that!

"no lets not go there, i asked nick how much??? as i had a couple of few grand spare, he never got back to me so i sank it into the morgage!!!!!"
Why would he get back to you? One guy asking how much is not a credible bidder and any potential costs would be covered by NRAs so it's not like he'd be able to just tell you.

Right, I've got a few minutes this morning to catch up before heading out to a beer fest, so I'll try and answer what I can...
Who's Online: The problem with the Who's Online feature will be rooted somewhere in the BBC Single Sign on stuff. No matter who wins the bid for h2g2 I *very* much doubt that they'll be able to keep the BBC ID stuff, so a whole new login, signup, etc will have to be written. Which will unfortunately mean a user transition process (usually a "go here and sign up again with your email and user number type form thing).
This will mean also that the Who's Online will stop working *completely*
This will mean also that I for one definitely want to see it back and you can bet your last grandma that if the community win the bid it'll be rebuilt to work.

Wow, that was an easy morning catch up.
To follow on a bit from my last post, the who's online system stuff (including the eyes) would almost certainly have to be rebuilt. Might be helpful to think about how you'd like it to work. Exactly as it does(n't) now? Or are there improvements that would be good to see?

Getting everyone to re-register, does that mean people lose their current join date?

Sounds like an extended handover period -
New owner plus BBC rep in the same office while the re-reg and initial fiddly bits are sorted?

I'm about as technical as a tin of spam, but I don't see why. Whoever gets the site will get all the original data (and join dates) and it shouldn't be beyond the wit of man to come with a system where re-registrees are assigned their original join date.
I've been here nearly as long as Pastey, during which time the login system's gone through at least three versions, and my join date remains unchanged.

Pastey Posted Jun 4, 2011
In theory the join date will be attached to the user account, which I understand to be different from the BBC account.
From what I've seen for other things I've built for the BBC, the BBC single sign on process we all went through attached our h2g2 accounts to BBC accounts. It don't convert them, but associated them. So, I'm guessing that the join date and user numbers will remain as they currently are.

For me the eyes & who's online are nice-to-have but not all that important.
Join date is in the same category - the dates on my entries would be an indication, to anyone interested.

As far as I understood the re-registering is there to connect the current BBC-id of a person with a new id on the new site. Like 'oh, this really is kea, and not someone who just pretends to be kea' and then you get access to your PS etc.
Thursday, 17 February 2011: H2G2 Sale - The next step
That makes sense. It means people don't lose their login name either.
I think a few researchers lost their join dates during the barlesque introduction. Not sure if that ever got fixed.

Pastey Posted Jun 4, 2011
It didn't get fixed. I lost mine.
I'm hoping it's still there in the database and I can get it back though.

I lost access to several accounts during last year's upgrade. I think because the reregistration wasn't that clear to me and I probably did some things in the wrong order and for some reason the system just created new accounts instead of upgrading the old ones. Deleting the new accounts didn't help and the Eds weren't able to sort it. Something to watch when we move.

I remember a conversation I had with the Powers waaaaay back when h2g2 first started, where they said nothing was every deleted. That when you edited an entry you were working on, it kept the previous versions as well, so if something did go horribly wrong there'd be more chance of data rescue. I've no idea if this was kept up, but it does instill some hope

Thanks for the heads-up on that Kea.
I've transferred several user account systems over the years. Very recently I built http://www.mylivingstreets.org.uk where there was a lot of game psychology, competition, leaderboards, achievements, etc involved. And as soon as people realised this we were inundated with requests to transfer accounts between different versions of the same workplaces and departments, etc as people thought it'd help their team scores. It didn't, in fact it had the opposite effect But there was a lot of user database manipulation involved there :/
I've been very lucky with the account transfers here, although I did loose my first account which wouldn't just be a five figure account, it'd be one that started with a 1. Still, I've got so used to this account over the years I don't want to risk losing it
