The numbers appear to be the U number of the person you are replying to.
The missing "return to" line is more of a worry

Definitely the one you are replying to rather than the last one before.

Has this update got anything to do with how slow hootoo has been for the last two days?

aka Bel - A87832164 Posted Jul 28, 2004
Probably not, cause it's still slow

Ah yes, you're right, the "return to..." button is missing. In that case it does keep its status as a full blown bug
Oh well, you'll just have to use the back button instead until it gets fixed.

You can call me TC Posted Jul 28, 2004
In reply to Master B, in case someone else has posted in the meantime.
No. I right click on the "Return to.. without saying anything" if I'm replying to several postings at once, and open the conversation in another window, so I can address everyone by name. I could avoid that by right clicking on the "Reply" button and opening a new window for that instead in the first place, I suppose.
The nice thing about hootoo is that at least you can get a word in edgeways at any time. So it is a privilege to be able to "return to the conversation without saying anything" if I want to - and not because the others were just being too loud and too full of themselves to let me say my

'You are replying to: Click here to return to the Guide Entry without saying anything'
What the heck does that mean
Have Conversations been converted to Guide Entrys?
Are all Conversations now called 'Click here to return to the Guide Entry without saying anything'?
'If it ain't broke, fix it until it is'

Aye this site is *feature packed* and some of them are *undocumented features for sure*.
¬
Though I think some place in the destructions there may be mention of the link now missing.
¬
At the moment the 'U' number responsible for the post you are giving replt to is shown... Which is darn handy for making link reference in a reply to say U42U167550 and proof of identity.
¬
If you reply to this post you should see 210501 and will know it's me, not a clone. I hope it stays!
¬
Now a question, the tag shows 'nicknames' yet I would like to know the number, not the name of a VIEWER and maybe to use the number with a link, is this possible?

The number wasn't always there was it?
Earlier tonight I tried to go to my user page, and it had been replaced with the default unedited user page with no conversations or anything.

Well, the 'U' number is back to being the 'return without saying anything' link.
Having both would be nice.

Couldn't one just hover the mouse over the person's name on the conversation page to see their U-number?

Not everybody is using a mouse. I'm not even using a PC just now. Indeed there is often more than one way to get the same result... The 'Back' button serves as well as the link to return, yet it's there. So why not add "...any thing to Unnnnn" since nicknames can be dynamic, and 'U' numbers static.

I see your point about the back button--I still think the link is useful because you can open it in a new window to look back at the conversation without losing the reply window--can't do that with a back button.

Trillian's Child. (I' put a U number, but I'd have to 'visit' the personal sace, come back here to post, and I'm trying to reply at speed.)
¬
Post 70, describes opening another window. Does [Ctrl]+[N] not do this on IE, and other web browsers have a the same idea?
¬
Hey, I'm all for the link, after all there was a time when the physical 'Back' button on the keyboard for STB users did nothing. I'd just like to see an extension to it, adding usability, and fuction to a broad user-base.

I like the return button because it is an easier way to check if you are about to simulpost with someone on fast threads (I open it as a new window).
The U number wasn't that useful to me because I don't know that many researchers' numbers. It was mildly interesting seeing the 'age' of posters I suppose.
Key: Complain about this post
