Well as an example... Talking about Jim, Jimster/Jims can be cleared up with Jim Lynn U6 being one person and Jimster somebody else, though I've seen people refer to 'U6' as Jimster.
¬
¬
Kat changed her name from Jedi girl to Jedi warrior etc. etc. "Kat" - Now 'Positive Thinker." Would'nt it be simpler to say: "Kat Unumber", when refering to somebody in the third person?

Kat is U194113 as "Postive Tinker" currently, so use of 'U' is hand if you refer to a person by name, not h2g2 nickname too.
¬
BTW: Trillian's Child is U154942, Jimster is U292 (U198320 "to keep track of support pages.")

Traveller in Time "Thanks 'Jim Lynn', it now works !"
"I disagree, every time you come up to a new 'NickNamed' researcher you have to check their Personal Space to see who you it is. It is one of the sticky things about this site. "

Sure but apart from DNA (and now Jim Lynn) it's unlikely that I will remember anyone's U number (other than my own, and even that is stretching it a bit at times).

Well, Kat is really U198984. Being able to check woh is who, no bad thing? Being able to see who you are giving reply to for sure helpful?
¬
Well as long as (i) the system does not point you to a 'yet to be written page' or (ii) search works properly. Searching for a person is not as good as clicking on a U refernce in a post IMO.
¬
Problems logging in? h2g2 was not implemented this morning?

Well--it would help if people put their U-numbes in their user names, or just kept consistant and no-overlapping names--don't take a name if someone already had it, don't change your whole name every week.

I don't see how putting my U-number in my name would help. It doesn't stop anyone else passing themselves off as Master B (U190397), although God knows why they'd want to.

On the other hand: find a short name that is not taken, kind of hard with nearly 250.000 names already in use."

R Daneel I agree 'U' numbers could be be part of a nickname. Though would need to be put there by the system (skeptic, yes).
¬
Master B Correct *you* puting your 'U' in a post won't stop people passing themself off as you. The system putting them at the bottom of a post could. - It's dual pursose, security and makes pointing to a user in particular easy when they are out of sight/out of thread. eg. "What do you think of the table on SEF's U211824 space?"
¬
TiT, 250,000 you say... Have a peek at U565055 it shows one person with more than a fair share.

I do like to have a name however, if we dafault to numbers we really become part of this complex Artificial Intelligent System.
But I think there will always be some one to disagree < U251272 >?"

It doesn't have to be short, so much as it has to be unique. How many noun/adjective combinations are their in English. Three words is fine--people can abbreviate or use acronyms. Jim Lynn is not too much to type--but if we had two Jim Lynns, differing by their long suffixes, which they changed fairly regularly, that would be rediculous.
I'm not that worried about the impersonation problem--if you can't tell if it's realy someone you know, you can go to the person's user page. And, considering it is a serious house rules violation, I can't imagine it's that big a problem. I'm only aware of two cases of it that have occured.

Kaz Posted Jul 30, 2004
So what happens is someone chooses Kaz as their nickname, should I change mine to make others lives easier? Bearing in mind that my real name is Kaz, and I don't do nicknames, I get bloody annoyed when I join a new site and get told I can't have Kaz cause someone else has it. You can guarantee that person is using it as a nickname, and I believe I should have precedence - whinge over!
