Rupert was the period of downtime the website had when the BBC took it over from its private owners. I wasn't there but I believe it was a pretty worrying time

It was also the name given to the downtime when H2G2 was unavailible, as a deal was worked out for the BBC to take control of it. I'm not sure if they did or not Oh, guess they did *worried concerned and on the edge of his seat How about paddington?

As long as we still have h2g2 as the Guide, and we can still meet old h2g2 friends online, it's by me.

Well, that's all pretty worrying.
Good luck and s to all the displaced Italics - and good luck to our Community. It rather sounds as if it might need it.

Sorry to change the subject, but I had no idea there was a smiley - so surely if we can have such weird and wonderful things like that, we have to stay by default?

I suppose we should have spotted that something was afoot when Anna left, and there was absolutely no mention of her successor being appointed. Now in the opening post from the staff, they mention 6 full time members of staff, implying that there had never been any intention of replacing her.
All very worrying. I don't know what will come out of it, I just hope that something can be salvaged

We still don't know exactly what changes will be made, or how they will affect h2g2 as we know it today, but the mere existence of a smiley sounds like a good excuse to make things even better here, IMHO.

Worrying indeed - and the other italics have been getting involved in 'other projects' for a while too, Ashley and Abi have both gone to other bits of the beeb.
So does this mean one editor and one tech support, or are the chaps with the spanners not counted as h2g2 specific staff?
The italics are overstretched now, so I guess that these changes will mean there will be a lot less time for whoever is left to be visibly participating on site

Greydesk, have a look at Anna's leaving announcement, it actually says she wasn't going to be replaced...
Firstly, I sincerely hope, whatever happens, the italics all have jobs at the end of this reorganisation... the rest, well, at the end of the day, as Mark Moxon once said, 'It's only a website'.
I must admit I can't see quite how the site will function with just two full time staff, but I suppose that's what they're busy discussing now...
Good luck guys!

GD, they said at the time they weren't replacing Anna. Various other italics have displayed elsewhereness (eg in their nicknames). It has been looking a little like the "rats leaving a sinking ship" phenomenon for some time except that there were other dna sites or bits of BBC as destinations (actual or hinted at).

Posting is so slow on h2g2 at the moment that, as well as being a massive simulpost, my last one was 2 minutes old by the time I was allowed to see it!

It seems to have been doing that more and more the last couple of months. Its definately somethign with the site, as this broadband connection is as fast as you could want on any other site

Personally I can take my posting being a bit slow; so long as I still have something to post to.

Two staff (say for sake of example one editorial and one community) would surely end up resulting in a cutback of the number of front page entries per week down from 25 to something closer to 10. Fewer front page entries would as a result require fewer Sub-eds to tweak them and fewer Scouts to pick them.
There would probably be similar cutbacks with the Aces and Gurus too, to make the groups a manageable size by just one full time staff member.
Key: Complain about this post
