Quote;
"One of our key objectives is to make sure that high-quality content and services are provided to as many BBCi visitors and Community members as is possible."
"I sincearly hope that this is not just a rationalisation of what might be effectivly reducing the ammount of content and quality recieved by visitors and members. If the plan is that h2g2 can be run just as effectivly by two staff and no significant changes are planned (except to other areas of BBCi for the better) then great. I rather think that this probably will not be the case."

Management speak... honastly.... why doesn't bablefish give a translator for that!
I don't think they can reduce what is already on h2g2 but they may stop it growing as quickly.

About management speak, there is a spell checker device designed to remove management gobbldygook from documents. It is called Bullfighter for obvious reasons.

I don't think this is cause for concern at this point. Keep in mind that the technology that runs h2g2 is also used for other communities. Also we need to keep in mind that our own beloved italics are the 'experts' and as such are the most qualified to assist with the other communities. This doesn't necessarily mean there is going to be a decline in h2g2.
The temporary stop of processing edited entries is just that. Temporary. We should just relax. Then freak out later if and when it becomes necessary.

Yeah, it'd be very unfair to have the site as big as it is with only two (paid) members of staff.
If h2g2 is to remain as successful as it is, a more organised volunteer system is in order. And it can be done - look how successful the current schemes are!

I did notice use of the words 'full-time', so will we have some of the existing staff on a part-time basis? One-eighth of Ashley every second Tuesday, a third of Sam on Thursday afternoons and so on...

Hey - maybe they can use some of the money that save to pay volunteers' expenses - a tenner a month?
"[Might] DNA hub staff ... get downsized too?"
Downsized from two? Hope not.
I'd like to make it clear at this point that I am not angry. However, if I was to express my disappointment in words, there'd be trouble. There's been a sense of impending doom since the Summer Party - one of the Italics said something to me that I won't share with you, but suffice it to say it was not anything that made much sense at the time.
Before anyone starts, I think it would be highly distasteful to discuss who might go and stay. I know you weren't going to, but just in case.
Finally, it appears to be time to start considering putting together some kind of plan for keeping the site going. Me, I think it would have to involve the volunteers taking on higher-level tasks based on good record of service. Not that I necessarily include myself in that, since my punctuality is worse than Virgin Trains'.

I've mentioned this before, but i'll raise it again for the benefit of those that skipped the backlog.
of course the future of h2g2 is contingent on the continuing existence of BBCi, which is not at all guaranteed
There is currently a Public Consultation for the Independent Review of BBC Online going on, we are talking about it over at F94020?thread=314946

ACEing and Guruing doesn't seem to need italic involvement. Presumably Scouts and SubEds do need more interaction. If that is the case it would make sense to concentrate italic attention in those areas.

S***w it. If I have to win the lottery and buy the b****y site then I will. It's been done the other way round, after all.
Whoami?
You know how rare it is for me to use even moderately naughty words. That's why there's no cake.

Exactly how much is h2g2 costing the BBC? Actually, I'm not that fussy. A rough approximate will do just fine.

Tracey, yes h2g2 was an established community before it was taken over by the BBC but there was no money to pay the staff and no source of income besides venture capitalists, however strong a community money was needed to host it.
Nyssa, of course I am more worried about the italics, I just took it that the tone of the entry meant that they were being redeployed.
I am really seeing no point in this spectulation, so I shall be unsubcscribing from this thread.
See you in two weeks time when we shall know what is happening.
