True, but since it's not been officially announced there's no telling what's going to happen to it in the future.

I wonder why it was put in anyway, and without an announcement. Maybe it's to support some future DNA site? Or maybe they were just bored!

That's true - it might stop working in the future. However, as it's already on the live site, it's fine to use it, as far as I know.

I've got no idea why it was added or why it wasn't announced, though!

my apologies for this question being completely unrelated to the gadget.

does the inclusion of the tree gadget in all skins mean there is no longer any difference between 'normal' and 'expert' user modes now? or did i not follow that correctly?

I've checked just now and the Tree Gadget is only seen in Classic Goo and Alabaster in 'Expert' mode. I didn't see where it said that the Tree Gadget would be added to all the skins, though... smiley - erm

If you mean the Tree Views for Categorisation, that's at the top of all Edited Articles. Also, all the Volunteer Badges are visible in all the skins. smiley - smiley

"all the Volunteer Badges are visible in all the skins" - but the Community Artist one is wrong in alabaster (showing the goo version). It was reported on the dev server but apparently not fixed.

No problem smiley - smiley

I personally like the Tree View Categorisation a lot! It's interesting to see, for example, how A954696 managed to be categorised... smiley - winkeye

We were all enjoying a well-earned weekend. smiley - smiley

I've alerted the Guide team, and they are going to categorise that entry. If you see anymore, can you alert us on Editorial Feedback? (<./>Feedback-Editorial</.&gtsmiley - winkeye It's sometimes difficult to keep up with announement threads once a bit of drift has set in. smiley - smiley

All Edited Entries are put into the categorisation system. Some non-Edited entries are also entered into the World of h2g2, although that is completely arbitrary on our parts. smiley - biggrin

Hello all,

A couple of other things:

The proper colunteer badges have now been added to Alabaster, though initially the wrong ones were uploaded by yours truly. smiley - blush

Secondly, the tag. It's not meant to be a hidden feature, and so shouldn't be taken away at short notice (!). The announcement about the changes was a basic list of the most important features. The tag was overlooked and we didn't realise it was going to catch on in such a big way! However, we're in the process of adding it to all the relevant Guide ML pages.

Thanks! smiley - smiley

Did anyone explain what happens if we close a h2g2 window without logging out?

6 March, 2003: Changes to h2g2

OwlofDoom

Well, I never log out. I use the permanent cookie system (the "remember me" tick-box) so that whenever I visit h2g2 I'm already logged in. Of course, this is only safe if your computer is never used by other people (or is a multi-user system such as Windows 2000 or *nix).

If you close without logging out, nothing happens. If you're not using 'remember me' cookies, then your logged-in session will terminate automatically when your browser shuts down (not necessarily just that window though - it may require all windows to close for the session cookies to be wiped).

As far as I remember (although correct me if I'm wrong - I'm not a Windows user), in Windows 98 (and only 98 I think) the Desktop and File Manager are actually part of Internet Explorer, so the browser session only ends when you shut down your computer - unless of course you've discovered Mozilla, Phoenix or Opera (or *shudder* Netscape).
