Ancient Brit

smiley - snork - initially the noise made when trying to suppress laughter, eg when supposed to be w*rking.
Now used for laughter of any kind at any time although rude bits tend to generate the snorkiest.

The Snork and his sister the Snork Maiden were characters in Tove Jansson's excellent Moominvalley books.

Highly recommended, too. Every kid should have them read to them at bedtime.

They deserve a guide entry. (Maybe there is one, I haven't checked)

If you're interested, start with "Comet in Moominland".

RFJS__ - trying to write an unreadable book, finding proofreading tricky

I have to agree that the edges on smiley - shhh and smiley - rolleyes take the edge slightly off having new Smileys after all this time. (And I'm going to be even more awkward and note that the smiley - shhh graphicsmiley - artist differs from the spellingsmiley - biro needed actually to produce it; from A9806295 it appears even Jim Lynn has had trouble with that.)

But apart from that, smiley - applausesmiley - somersault. I'm especially glad the new animated ones are still tasteful.smiley - bluelightsmiley - tardis

(Hmm, the smiley - bluelight appears to float above the level of the text; maybe it could double up as an alternative smiley - ufo.)

"The smoother smileys have anti-aliased edges. Not all graphics packages will do that."

If the package will "resample" a larger graphic down to a smaller size (as opposed to just "resizing" it) then all you need to do is draw the smiley four times real size using a four-pixel brush, then resample it down. But then, I suspect you already knew that, Amy... smiley - artist

I saw a h2g2 smiley being used on a non-BBC message board the other day. Surely they're not allowed to do that?
