pheloxi*, the suitable punishment for a violation of the houserules is yikesing of the concerned posting. As you seem to be the one being offended, you have the honour of pushing the complaint buttonsmiley - smiley

Don't know if this is the right place to say it, but if you want this project to succeed, it would probably be a bad thing if you all went round yikesing any and every post that *might* *possibly* break the rules. This would generate a lot of extra complaint traffic which might suggest that the pilot isn't working.

What would be far better would be for everyone to *stick to the rules*. Don't swear, defame, post copyright stuff or be offensive. And if you see people behaving badly, tell them they're behaving badly and they might actually stop.

If, at the end of this pilot, we can show editorial policy that the number of complaints hasn't significantly risen then it should continue indefinitely.

But if they see ten times the number of complaints simply because you're all trying to be diligent and yikesing anything that *might* be offensive or break the rules, then that might look like a failure.

So, the complaints button should only be used for its original purpose - complaining about things the you genuinely find offensive (or that you are pretty sure break the rules in a big way).

We won't be giving out any prizes for the most complaints submitted. smiley - smiley

Jim that was one of reasons not use the yikes button.

plus that is more fun to hold something above a one of pisa people. smiley - winkeye

Yes,I am the Lady Lowena!Get with the programme...

Thanx for posting this on my space...I have never complained about any conversation, thread or posting, though. If I might make one suggestion,it would be nice to know what you were getting moderated for..it isn't always obvious. 'Hidden for language content' Some of the views put forward in this posting could be deemed to be offensive' ,that sort of thing. Also one mans irony is another mans deeeeply offensive comment...difficult job moderating I imagine(creep, creep)

Anyone who has content hidden receives an email Lady Lowena - so they will know why they have been moderated.

Deciding what is offensive and what isn't, isn't always an easy job. If we're unsure if something will offend, we leave it up to the readers to decide - which they can do by using the complaints button.

So if we find something that breaks the house rules would it be polite to put a post after it saying to the effect that your post broke the rules, we are a self policing community so I felt it necessary to 'yikes' it. Point to the rules and ask them not to be disheartened we all make slip ups occasionally and that we hope they will continue to post in the spirit of h2g2?

We have been discussing here <./>F55683?thread=221214</.> about the importance of making a definate difference between the volunteers and the italics as it is possible that some newbies may be confused, I'm not sure whether my last suggestion would add to this confusion or not.

"Anyone who has content hidden receives an email Lady Lowena - so they will know why they have been moderated."

the other day I had quite a few postings hidden for libel- or at least I assume they were all for libel, I only received about three or four emails but had more than that hidden. Not complaining, just making a point.
